How To Collect A Nasopharyngeal Swab
Collect specimens within the first 24-72 hours of onset of symptoms and no later than 5 daysย after onset of symptoms.
Have the patient blow his/her nose to remove excess mucous and tilt their head back.
Insert swab into one nostril all the way to the nasopharynx (resistance will be felt).
Rotate swab over surface of posterior nasopharynx for 10-15 seconds.
Withdraw swab from collection site; insert into transport tube and break swab at the score mark.
After collection, immediately transport specimen to the laboratory for testing. If transport to the laboratory is delayed, place specimen on ice or refrigerate.
