Name: Flopter
Debut: Super Mario 3D World
I was going to cover Flopter alongside Spindrift, but I ended up getting sidetracked by Torkdrift, didn’t I? Well, turns out there’s a lot thats weird about Flopter that I hadn’t even noticed! So I think he’s earned a post of his very own.Â
The obvious question, and one that it’s my job to try and answer, is of course: “what the heck is this thing!?” When playing through the game itself, I never really thought twice about it whenever it appeared... that sure is a flying enemy, alright! They hover in from off-screen with their spinning propellers, and then land for a short breather (a stomping opportunity).
But I never really got a close enough look at its body... that’s a bee! If you have yellow and black stripes, you’re officially a bee! And now that you mention it, his propellers are kinda modelled after bug wings, huh?
Of course... this thing isn’t remotely bee-like at all. It’s got a big green head with... safety goggles? Nothing about this says bug to me... he’s more of a vertical pseudo-bug, which is weird! And we love weird! Flopter is just weird.Â
