I’ve recently added some amazing stuff to my collection and wanted to show you guys✨

I’ve managed to find a few 2001/2002 Pucca plush keychains including both Oh! Honey and Angel Pucca plushies!✨

I’ve also found an Abyo plush keychain from the 2003 Pucca & Friend’s line as well as a summer series Garu plush keychain (my bf is currently making me a Pucca themed pegboard so I can display them💕)

I also grabbed a 2001 hanging wall pillow and a Pucca wall organiser that both feature the first three lines of merch Pucca did! (the Fairytale series: Pucca as the Little Match Girl, Pucca in Wonderland and Pucca in the Deli House.)

The bag is from around 2015 and I think it’s another reference to Alice in Wonderland but it doesn’t feature VOOZ’s early designs of the same theme so I’m assuming it’s separate from that series

This mini character bio is from the Pucca’s Funny World Adventure comic book series and it is, to my knowledge, the only example of Santa’s wife being given an actual name!

Obviously it’s meant as more of a parody than anything as Santa himself is cosplaying as Elvis throughout the comic but still… This is literally the first and only time I’ve actually seen a name ascribed to his wife

So do we all just agree to call her Madonna?

Here is something very special I’ve been wanting to show you all…

TITLE: 鬼马卜嘎传奇 - 中国娃娃

TRANSLATION: The Legend of Mischievous Pucca - China Baby

This officially licensed Pucca book was published in China in June 2002. It is a prose novel featuring grayscale Pucca illustrations taken from the flash vector images released by VOOZ between 2000-2001. The book is structured like a *wuxia(武俠) light novel and is divided into four narrative parts. Written by Kim Sung-ae (translated to 金圣爱) and published by New World Press, this book - although not authored by Pucca’s creator Kim Bu-gyeong - represents one of the earliest narrative expansions of the Pucca IP and offers rare insight into how the character was localised and interpreted during Pucca’s first international growth phase.

*Wuxia(武俠) = A popular Chinese genre of martial arts fantasy, focusing on chivalrous wandering warriors and epic, fantastical adventures with legendary heroes. This style of writing often borrows from Daoist and Buddhist mysticism.

Much like the Flash animations (and later the TV adaption) this book presents Pucca as the central figure in a long-form comedic adventure that blends romance, martial-arts parody, and everyday chaos. At its core, the story follows Pucca, a bold, impulsive, and fiercely affectionate girl whose single-minded devotion to Garu repeatedly throws her into absurd, and sometimes dangerous, situations.

As we know, Pucca’s love is never portrayed quietly or gently; instead, it is overwhelming, disruptive, and unstoppable, often clashing with Garu’s strict ninja discipline and emotional restraint. This book is loyal to the narrative framing of Pucca and the overall dynamic between her and Garu. In fact, given the (albeit rough) translations of the chapter titles, this book is possibly one of the first long-form Pucca stories licensed by VOOZ! It also seems to delve into both Pucca and Garu’s background before they met. It is important to remember however that although this books is officially licensed by VOOZ, Kim Bu-gyeong himself did not write this story. This is an adapted version of Pucca and Garu’s love story, retold by the author of this book, Kim Sung-ae (김성애). I cannot know until it is translated how different (if at all) this narrative will be compared to other, later released Pucca books however given the chapter titles, it does not seem to take too many liberties with the overall story. With part one centring around Garu and his backstory, part two centring Pucca (with mentions of her father) and parts three and four focusing on their adventure together after meeting. The story is still something I personally cannot wait to uncover!(˶ˆᗜˆ˵)

This book is also a notable artefact for Pucca History as it portrays Pucca before her later global softening into a mostly gag-based mascot with the tone being an early-2000s East Asian rom-com adventure and not a Western child-focused, slapstick comedy.

While researching this book I found multiple listings of it in Chinese libraries with the added note “只显示在馆” (displayed at museum) meaning the book was unable to be loaned out. Naturally this piqued my interest…

When a Chinese library or archive lists a book as “on display at museum,” it usually means the book has a cultural/historical preservation status or the book is no longer treated as a normal circulating item. Instead, it’s considered a representative of a specific cultural moment, part of a notable publishing wave or tied to a historically influential IP. Considering the publication date of this book (June 2002), this suggests that some early Pucca material is being preserved as part of early-2000s East Asian pop culture history. Meaning the book could potentially be considered a historically significant early artifact that is especially valuable as it documents Pucca’s experimental, pre-standardised era.

This book was also released alongside another Pucca book in and around 2001-2002. Due to the age of both books, little to no information can be found about them online so the contents of these books is yet unknown…

Given how little is known about them and taking into account their rare, potentially historical significance, I was extremely eager to get my hands on these books! Thankfully I eventually found a copy of 鬼马卜嘎传奇 - 中国娃娃 (as pictured above) and have recently acquired the other, slightly more elusive Pucca book…

So… what is the point of this post? Why am I rambling about old, Chinese-exclusive Pucca books?

Well…

Given how old these books are and their “display only” status in Chinese museums it’s not a stretch to imagine the value of owning such items. I believe these books could potentially be some of the first (if not the very first) officially licensed Pucca books released. Pucca was created in 1999 with the first Flash animation being released in 2000. Official merchandise was being sold by VOOZ via postnut as early as August 2001. VOOZ then expanded their marketing to China and other overseas countries but that first step into the Chinese market is vastly underreported in interviews. These books were published June 2002 meaning they could very likely be the first Pucca books to be officially released by VOOZ. I can’t yet say that with absolute certainty as I have not been researching this specific developmental stage of the brand for very long. If I am wrong, I will absolutely amend that statement. If I am correct… My archive owns a very important artefact of Pucca history and I could not be happier!(˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)

My hope is to have these books professionally translated so that the English text is as accurate to the original as possible. I will be doing my own rough translation so that I can have a general idea of what the story entails but as I, unfortunately, do not speak Chinese the end result will more than likely not be 100% accurate until I can find a professional to assist me further. Once the books are translated I will be uploading them as a PDF to here or (if I ever finish creating it) my website so that fellow fans can appreciate the historical context of these stories and allow them to step out of obscurity!
