The Backstory:

Last week Capt’n Clean and I watched the Oscar-nominated Disney animated movie, Encanto. It’s pretty incredible, and I predict it will win the Academy Award for animation. We loved it.

It’s all about a family that has been magically transformed into a band of relatives with special gifts. One has incredible strength, one has ESP, another makes flowers grow, and the list goes on. The main character, Mirabel, was left off the list. She has no “gift” like the rest of the Madrigal clan. She tries to keep a positive attitude, but it’s hard, especially since her sister, Isabella, is, well, perfect. The girl exudes fragrant, colorful flowers everywhere she goes. And she’s beautiful…and skinny.

I’m not going to tell you what happens in the movie, because I want you to see it if you can. But, as I watched, and cried (it is one of those Disney tear jerkers) it inspired me to draw this cartoon.

Have you ever known an Isabella? Do you have one in your family? Do you ever feel like everyone around you is exceptional, but you?

Man, I sure have. I’m not an Isabella. I have never even come close to being one. And, most importantly, I never, ever will be one.

Just being yourself is tough. It requires that you give up on being perfect. That’s a hard thing to accomplish for many  nerdy girls like me. But you know what? When you embrace your flaws and shortcomings, whether it is the way you look, your age, athletic prowess, abilities or talents, you can discover and fall in love with…YOU.

And, when you stop caring about what everyone else thinks, and start being YOU, you are able to give the greatest gift of YOU to the world.  YOU, in all your glory, warts and all, are FLAWSOME!
