It’s carnival time in New Orleans, y’all!
Half Past Mardi Gras
Like fire, like heat. Since we are just a week from the big day, Mardi Gras Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, I reckon that I probably should post a few of my favorite works. Even though these guys look like they might be part of a terrorist organization, they are really flambeaux. In the very old days before there were streetlights they actually did light the way for the parades. Today, they are one more…

LIGHT MY FIRE
1960s Mardi Gras flambeaux torch . Wood / brass and tin . The first official Flambeaux debuted with the Mistick Krewe of Comus on Fat Tuesday, 1857 . A tradition that arouse out of necessity but turned into a spectacle in its own right as the carriers waved and twirled the torches while dancing down the streets.

“Back in the day, they didn't have lights. They didn't have no energy, no power. So they used the fire to show the floats and the king and the queens and stuff, so you could see them. That's the tradition of the flambeaux. I've been coming out here [with the flambeaux] since I was 9 years old. I was carrying – you know how when they have a wreck and they have the flares? Well, they let the kids carry the flares. As I was coming up, I grew, got bigger, and started carrying the big ones. When I first started, I made $600 in one night. When I was 9 years old, oh they hated me. They didn't want me to be with them because all the kids was getting all the money. You get tipped way better than the adults.” #nolabeings #neworleans #flambeaux #mardigras2017 #mardigrasbeings2017

This One, Just Like This
This One, Just Like This
Flambeaux on Louisiana Avenue. Remember this one? It’s been a long time since I won an award of any kind of consequence. I had about the same reaction that musical miss did when she was nominated for a Grammy after many years. She got emotional. Tears rolled down her cheeks. Me too. This isn’t the biggest award in the world, but still. And, I didn’t have pay to enter. In fact, I didn’t even…

2021 ERIC KENT Rosé 88/7/5 PN/SY/GR Sonoma Coast 13.5 and my feelings on pinot rosé are well established, but looking the other way for a minute. Rather dark bloody orange with a musty nose feeling dusty and rich and lacking bright fruit. Full-bodied on the palate, a strong, definite *wine* with powerful bitter citrus notes and chewy structure fading to sharp finish. Definitely not Provence, but…
