My mom, Carol, the flag-maker around here, turns 69 today. She arrives at her shop no later than 8AM and usually stays till 4:30-5. And, she brings flags home each night to trim. She works 6-7 days a week. She doesnโt have a tv, only books, the New Yorker magazine, and a cassette/cd player with FM radio to keep her entertained. Sheโs old-school. Sheโs one of the most authentic people Iโve ever known. Unafraid of what others may think. Sheโs taught me so much, but she never taught me to sew. She entrusts me to help with her website, and run her social media, but Iโm not allowed to touch her sewing machines. Iโm in awe when I watch her work! Not many people consider what it takes to make a flag. Not many people think flag-making is an art. But I assure you, it is. Flags can be divisive, even controversial at times. But my mom has always used her talent, her voice, for good.
