AU from the point where Vespera is captured and to be imprisoned in Lumenaria.
Fintan tells them everything.
He tells them everything, shows them everything. Every memory of tortures witnessed secretly which make him want to retch. All the records and files, every conjecture and theory of Vespera's.
He tells them that he'll make sure she's no longer a danger.
(He does not tell them where to find her.)
Vespera is in her apartment. Numb now, not knowing one feeling from another. Barely speaks, barely moves.
'They'll come for you,' says Fintan. 'Lumenaria. They're going to lock you up.'
She nods. It was her design. She knows that escape is impossible.
'This needs to end, Vespera. This needs to end.'
They are not telepaths, but they glean each other's words from mind to mind anyway. Vespera hands him a starstone. Together, they leap.
No one else attends the walking-away. No one else attends the funeral. They plant flowers at the edge of the desert, and leave a note in the apartment.
Fintan sets the fire, and no one watches him turn himself into their funeral pyre.
At least they hold each other in death. At least they have that much.
(Bronte finds the note two days later, and weeps, and weeps, and doesn't stop.)
