I was listening to Always Been You by Michael Sanzone, if anyone is wondering where this came from.
"Eddie, hi." Bobby says when he opens the door, eyes narrowing a second later, "What's wrong?"
Eddie chuckles, shaking his head, hands shoved deep in his pockets to hide the trembling. "Nothing. I promise."
"Hmm." His old captain says, stepping aside, "Then come on in. I was about to make tea."
"Retirement really is treating you well then."
"Don't tell my wife...but I am incredibly bored."
Eddie laughs again as he and Bobby walk into the kitchen. There's an electric kettle boiling on the counter, along with a mug and a canister of tea that Eddie recognizes as one Buck got. Bobby goes to the cupboard and pulls out another mug before grabbing milk from the fridge.
"You haven't found the right hobby to fill your days yet, then?"
"No," Bobby drops a tea bag in each cup before pouring water over them. "Not for lack of trying. Buck's list has been helpful though."
"He'll be pleased to hear that. He definitely misses you at the station."
"How's his studying going? He's sitting the captain exam next month?"
Eddie nods his confirmation, leaning against the counter, "It was a bit of a struggle at first, because him and studying..." He grimaces lightly, "But we found a method that works for him. Helps that this is something he's passionate about."
Bobby smiles warmly, grabbing the mugs and nodding at the milk and sugar. Eddie grabs them and follows Bobby to the table, the two of them settling in.
They're quiet as their tea finishes steeping and they prepare their individual cups to their liking, each taking a sip to check it's to their satisfaction.
Then Bobby sits back in his seat, watching Eddie, "So. Not that I'm against this surprise visit, but I suspect you're here for a reason, Eddie."
"I am." Eddie admits, the nerves returning in full force. He takes a breath, reminds himself that this is just Bobby, the man who has cared for him for many years. "I came here because...I didn't do things right the first time. And I know that's in part due to me being young and the other circumstances...but Buck deserves right. He deserves everything."
There's a small, knowing smile on Bobby's face. Not that Eddie is surprised. He thinks Bobby knew the moment he opened the door why Eddie came.
"And you matter to Buck. Me too, obviously, but to Buck you're..." Eddie shrugs, smiling, "You're more."
Eddie doesn't say it, but they both know what he's saying: You're Buck's father, in all the ways that matter. Blood doesn't define it.
"What did you come to ask then, Eddie?" Bobby questions, eyes shining as he takes a sip of his tea.
"I'd like your blessing to ask Buck to marry me."
Bobby lowers the cup and keeps watching Eddie. Studying Eddie. "You know, you deserve right too. Not just Buck."
Tears rush to Eddie's eyes and he blinks rapidly. "I've come to realize that. Because of him."
"Good." Bobby nods, "Of course you have my blessing, Eddie. You have since long before the two of you got together."
Eddie releases a breath, "Still feels nice to hear."
"Mhm." Bobby smiles, lost briefly in memory. Eddie wonders if he's thinking of Marcy. But then Bobby is shaking it away. "I'm proud of you, Eddie."
"Oh." Eddie blinks again, not expecting this. "T-thanks."
"You were an impressive young man when I met you and invited you to the 118." Bobby continues, "And I've watched you grow and become who you truly were meant to be. I'm honoured that I've been a part of that. And I'm proud to see you embrace yourself."
Ducking his head, Eddie feels his cheeks warm. "That means a lot, Bobby. Thank you."
"Thank you for allowing me to witness this." Bobby reaches across the table, squeezing Eddie's hand, "And I cannot wait to witness the life you and Buck create as husbands."
"Well," Eddie clears his throat, meeting Bobby's eyes once more, "Maybe you can help make that happen?"
"What do you mean?"
"I know I have to propose to him still, and then we'll have to plan because we both know Buck is going to want a real, proper wedding." Bobby chuckles and nods at that. "But, well, I know he'll agree with me when I say this...Bobby, we'd love for you to be the one to marry us."
Bobby's eyes grow wet this time. "I would love that, Eddie. Thank you."
Unable to hold back anymore, Eddie pushes his chair back, Bobby quick to follow, and the two meet in a warm embrace.
"Thank you, Bobby. For bringing me to the 118. For everything."
