It had been a wondrously sunny day and the crowds had been massive. It had been one of the biggest Dwarven weddings in centuries, according to Thorin - everyone had their eyes on you. You had glowed in your pure white dress and was thought to be the fairest of them all on that splendid day.
But nothing good would ever last.
The days soon turned sour once more and your mood changed to match. It was rare to catch sight of the sun and for many torturous months, you and Fili had been attempting to start a family together; suffice to say that you had so far been unlucky.
Since the death of your last remaining family member, Fili had been your rock; your only means of standing when you were weak. Of course, Thorinâs sister and your mother-in-law - Dis - was there for you, but she was much older than you, and Kili was there but he was young and reckless. You needed your husband the most, more so when he was away.
And he knew this.
So why did Fili feel it was a wise idea to abandon you for Mahal knows how long for a mission that he may not even come back from? You understood that if he survived and succeeded it would be a tremendous accomplishment, but was it worth the risk? Thorin may have believed the Pale Orc to be dead, but you most certainly did not. Erebor was half a world away - not to mention occupied by a fire-drake - and that world was filled with malicious intent.
Regardless, the empty headed Durin was already on his way to the Shire. You hoped he was regretting his actions by now, your reaction to him bringing you the news should have been enough.
âAre you insane, husband? Do you not remember the tales our forefathers told us when we were children? The tales of a fire storm to the East? Why do you intend to travel to where the dragon resides?â you scolded Fili once he told you his news.
âOf course I remember, my love. Our forefathersâ stories told us of how with the loss of their home, they also lost their dignity. That is reason enough to give that dragon a taste of dwarvish iron,â Fili pleaded, his eyes begging. You, however, would not be swayed. You stood in front of him, hands balled and resting on your waist with a towel hanging limply from one of your hands. Your expression was hard and your eyes were narrowed.
âThat dragon will use you as frickinâ tooth-pick!â
Fili winced and you internally smirked. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
âKili is going,â Fili tried to reason, âThorin trusts the pair of us to be sensible.â
âDo not speak to me of Thorin Oakenshield,â you scoffed, whipping your towel out at him, âthat man is too easily swayed. This prospect wouldnât be up for discussion if it wasnât for him believing that Gandalf. Gandalf the Grey! Sounds like a vagabond to me. Besides, your uncle is wrong to trust you. Kili is no more than a mere child, neither are you-â
âI am heir to the throne-â
âWhat throne?â
âMy uncleâs.â
âYour uncle has no throne.â
âHe will soon.â
âYou are too intolerable to be a king,â you huffed, crossing your arms across your chest.
âYou are too feisty to be a queen,â Fili taunted, taking a couple of cautious steps towards you. When you made no move to attack him, Fili strode right up to you. Frowning, you cast your gaze to the ground, focusing on his shoes. Fili sighed, tucking his curled finger under your chin and lifting your face up.
You said nothing but simply gazed into your husbandâs eyes, they sparkled with hope but yours soon sparkled with tears. âI donât want you to leave. What if you donât come back?â you blubbered, tears rolling down your cheeks. Anyone who knew you would know that below your tough façade was a child afraid of losing people.
âI promise to come back to you, Y/N. What sort of husband would I be if I didnât? What sort of father would I be?â Fili smiled at you, the skin at his eyes crinkling slightly. One of his hands travelled down to rest on your stomach, his thumb massaging it in circles.
âIâm not pregnant, Fili,â you smiled slightly, placing your palm on top of his hands.
âA man can hope,â he moved his other hand to twirl a few strands of your hair in his calloused fingers.
âIndeed he can, but making a baby is a two person job so you would need to be here for it,â you countered, placing a palm on his cheek. âIâm still angry.â
âI donât blame you,â Fili whispered sadly, pulling you into his chest and resting his chin on the crown of your head.
âCome back to me, alive,â you murmured so quietly that you thought he didnât hear you, âBesides, itâs not my choice.â
He did hear you, however, âI swear it.â
Over a year had passed now and the only news of him you had heard was that Smaug was slain and there had been a battle. You had no idea what had become of the line of Durin so now you anxiously awaited Filiâs return. At that moment, you sat in an armchair by the fire with Dis. The pair of you shared stories of the three Durins with high hopes of their return.
The door opened and you spun around, hoping to come face to face with a triumphant Fili. Instead, you were saddened by the fact that instead a maid had entered the room. âMy ladies,â she curtseyed, âWe have received news from the Lonely Mountain. King Thorin wishes for his sister and daughter-in-law to journey to the mountain.â
âHeâs alive?â Dis seemed surprised by this fact as she scoffed, âMy brother survived a brawl with a dragon?â
âIndeed he did, my Lady. As did the Princes,â the maid said gleefully. You could tell she was overjoyed by the fact that Kili had survived for you had caught the lustful looks she had sent him previously.
Of course, she wasnât the only one to be happy. At his news, you jumped for joy. Fili had kept his promise to you! You almost squealed in joy.
Dis, who remained calm although you could see how happy she was if you looked carefully, dismissed the maid, âThank you, young lass, you are dismissed.â The maid bowed and left the room, Dis turned to you, âWe leave at first light in the morning, pack lightly.â
As a pair, you and Dis reached Erebor in what had to be the fastest length of time that anyone had travelled there in. Dis, being a shieldmaiden, had insisted that you and her did not need any guards or protection and it was best to travel quickly. However, when you reached Rivendell, Lord Elrond graciously offered you assistance through the Misty Mountains. You accepted it gleefully.
When Erebor finally came into view, you were astounded at how magnificent it was. It stuck out in the landscape and was the largest thing you had ever laid eyes on. You heart raced at the thought of your husband in there, awaiting your return.
A couple of night later, you and your mother-in-law arrived at the front gates of Erebor weary and in need of some good food. Two dwarves from the Iron Hills were stationed as watchmen and they gave you directions as to where your husband and his family would be. As you walked, Dis pointed out areas she used to visit as a child with Thorin and Frerin.Â
You finally arrived in front of a huge door encrusted with emeralds. Dis twisted the handle and poked her head in, âKnock, knock!â
A loud commotion erupted from the people in the room. âSister!â âMother!â three familiar voices greeted.
âWhereâs Y/N?â you heard Fili asked, concern lacing his tone.
âIâm here, my love, do not fret,â you smiled, pushing the door open so that you were in full view. You received a similar greeting to Dis, except a pair of warm arms were wrapped around you and you were crushed to a familiar chest.Â
You had missed him so much.
âMy love!â Fili exclaimed, kissing all over your face and head, âYou are really here.â
âYou kept your promise,â you smiled, your vision becoming blurry. âI donât believe it.â
âYou are here!â Fili repeated, leaning down and nuzzling his nose against yours. You grinned and did the same, wrapping your arms around his neck. You had never been happier.
