Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror (1998)
Today on âSteven and Vicki are too Futuristic to Recognize Ordinary Thingsâ: not realizing what a statue of the Virgin Mary was
Vicki: *framed for conspiracy against an army and sentenced to being shot dead on the spot*
Me: Wow, that feels the kind of thing that usually happens to Steven instead, he dodged a bullet this time-
Steven: *is also being taken to get shot because he tried to protect her*
Me: Ah, there it is

Done with Fields of Terror. I hadnât yet listened to a story featuring Maureen OâBrien so I very much enjoyed finally getting to hear Vicki again, and to hear Maureenâs take on the Doctor and Stevenâs voices. All of these characters are such a treat to listen to, as always. Each very distinctive and lovely in their own ways. I also enjoyed the character of Nicole, with her steely convictions spiting her own nerves.
I loved that the characters were done so well that I was able to picture things so well. A good story should take you away into your mind and make you be able to go with the story with ease and get a feel for the characters in such a way that it allows you to see their movements without necessarily being told, and this definitely did that. I could see all of the Doctorâs movements, whether speaking or silent. I instinctively saw Vicki and Steven crouch behind the couch before it said they did. Serious props for managing to engage with my imagination so well that I was able to be so on top of it, because itâs happened plenty of times listening to audios (or just reading books tbh) where my brain canât quite grasp what Iâm meant to be seeing and itâs a struggle to flesh out the landscape and the movements. Didnât have that problem at all here.
I also really appreciated the dedication to the horror-film feeling they were going for. They lead you to believe that this isnât a straight historical, that thereâs some monster lurking, and great lengths are taken to convince you of it... and then you learn itâs a person, and you go back in your head to review everything that came before and you realize that every single one of those awful noises and frights were specifically human, but handled in such a way that you completely believe in the monster and wouldnât recognize it as human unless you were already aware. Itâs unsettling in the best kind of way. And it just drives the point home even more; an ordinary man is this scary. But he was also a poor man who was driven mad and is acting in severe grief at what had been done in the tyrrany. The monster is only human, and the other humans who made him such are the monsters. My kind of poetry, Iâll fall for it every time, and this is a particularly well-done instance of it.
If this story is anything to go on, I look forward to the other audios in the set.
Always love the attention to detail of Stevenâs personality and habits from being a pilot
