Bertie Ditches "Shambolic" FF
Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern moved last night to distance himself from a Fianna Fáil party he described as "shambolic" and "a liability."
Ahern, who was accused by the Mahon Tribunal of outright "untruths", has vowed to clear his name. "How can anyone do dat," he remarked, "when dere joined at the hip to dis outfit? Sure I wouldn't have an ounce of credibility." He announced that he was cutting all ties with Fianna Fail "fortwit".
Fianna Fáil front-benchers moved quickly this morning to put a positive spin on the matter. "I'm glad he's gone," said moustachioed Limerick Deputy Willie O'Dea. "They way he treated the Tribunal was a disgrace. We couldn't have him associated with the party." His rubicund front-bench colleague Brendan Smith agreed: "As our leader Micheál Martin said the other day, we're better off without anyone who bears the taint of the bad old days. If you ask me," he added, "Bertie jumped before he was pushed."
Martin: "No Hiding Place" for Bertie Cronies
The Fianna Fáil leader, Mícheál Martin TD, vowed today that Bertie Ahern would be booted out of the party - along with all of the "cronies and henchman" who sustained him in power over two decades. Ahern was the subject of damning criticism by the Mahon tribunal, which found him guilty of repeated "untruths" and noted that his cabinet had set out to undermine the tribunal itself. Martin said he found the orchestrated sniping at the tribunal to be, if anything, even worse than the bare-faced untruths. "I won't rest until every man jack of them is rooted out of our party," he vowed, referring to those who sat smugly in cabinet alongside Bertie. "Nothing less is acceptable if we are to make a clean sweep and a fresh start in Fianna Fáil."

Tie Clip, Fianna Fail* memorabilia
circa 2005, bought at the Fianna Fail Ard Fheis.
*Fianna Fail was the dominant political party in Ireland during the Celtic Tiger. Many argue that its pro-cyclical economic policies, combined with ECB policy, were responsible for the level of economic devastation.
But they knew how to throw a party.
