Clusters of sparkles illuminated within a tree, where a breeze ruffled some leaves. It's trunk contained a room of a small size. Books cluttered a wooden desk along with empty vials, scribbled notes, and flasks.
In the center, a fairy examined her surroundings. She paced across a carpet while bracing her shoulders. Like she might be getting ready for a challenge.
She rubbed her hands and inhaled.
Okay. This was it.
A chance to see what the true extent of her powers. She had been practicing and reciting spells that would be helpful for this process. Something that she hadn't done before. She had spent her days and nights, trying to improve them. She knew if she gathered further knowledge, she would be prepared.
Keeping her mind clear was essential. She didn't allow anything else to get involved in what she had to do.
For a spell of such importance, she needed to concentrate. She hadn't casted it before, however, she yearned to. Because she had seen how others did and went in awe of their skills. Of their capability for their abilities to grow.
The fairy lifted a hand and flicked two fingers at flowers resting on a pot. She recited a sequence of words, slowly enunciating them. Frail sparkles drifted towards it, casting a faint glow over them. Her breath hitched while she stepped back, fixing her eyes on it.
When she waited for further signs of progress, her heart fell. The flower's petals wilted into pieces, withering into bits. Scattering over the soil covering the bowl.
Flapping her wings, she crossed her arms. She plopped down onto her chair and glared at the results.
That wasn't supposed to be! The spell was supposed to turn those flowers into another material. Crystals. Actual crystals with shiny surfaces in the shape of a plant.
According to most sages, this particular trick would aid in a fairy's abilities. Take them to another level. For her, it had only shown her that she needed to work more instead.
With a huff, she pressed a palm over her forehead.
Why did she have to be filled with bravado? Fooling herself into believing it would turn out well?
A part of her had acknowledge it would have been difficult earlier. And she hadn't followed it's advice, choosing to go against it. She had been sure about it. Even if she had nature-based abilities than those with light or astronomy.
Shaking her head, she picked up a book. Flipping to a page, re-reading the words written over the scripture. She glanced at the pot, grimacing at the bits of that unfortunate flower. She set it down on a table.
The crystallization process had been well-known within her village. Those stories of fairies forming crystals out of regular objects inspired her to study it. She heard warnings of how it might not each could cast that spell naturally, especially for those that didn't have proper experience.
To put a spell into those flowers and turn them crystallized? It had proven to be a challenge on her part.
Her eyes landed on a window, where stars shimmered throughout the deep blue sky. With a soft intensity instead of severe.
She looked at a far-off distance, stretching her fingers.
Yet she didn't have any qualms to give up. She could still try and see if it would work. She should have a break and regain her energy, somehow. Not overwork to the brink of exhaustion. If she didn't, her magic wouldn't be helpful: only causing a dire situation for her. And she had learned enough to prevent them.
So, the fairy stood up and recited a spell, shrinking down to a smaller size. Her wings fluttered while she soared towards an entry of the tree trunk. She reached up to a branch and breathed in a fresh scent.
Between the spaces of some leaves, a shimmer of light fell. She followed it's trail and found the stars sparkling. Resembling some crystallized illustration without any magic guiding it.
Keeping her gaze on it, she sat down on a branch. Just basking in the beauty above.
Like those stars, maybe she could still sparkle bright in her own way. Her abilities might need more improvement before she would go further. However, she could be patient and appreciate on what she had.
A breeze swept by while the sky remained bright.
