You would think being promoted to the head disciple position would change things in Shang Qinghua’s life – and it did! It sure did! He had to worry way less about sabotaging people and more about people sabotaging him!

But being an An Ding disciple still meant, like… work. He had the power of delegation now, even if a lot of people stink-eyed him for it, but he was still doing a lot of work. And, well, the only person he could blame for that was the An Ding Peak Lord.

There was a long silence. Jiang Fengmian held still, watching the lightning wrapped around his wife’s fingers.

Quietly, Yu Ziyuan began to laugh.

“At one point, that was your name,” Jiang Fengmian said steadily.

“And what of it?” Yu Ziyuan said. “Shen Jiu was a dirty, stunted creature with dirty, stunted cultivation, better off dead --”

Still. He thought about it, every now and then. It was difficult not to. While there was no way Shang Qinghua could beat Yue Qingyuan in single combat, the chance of a surprise attack succeeding was nonzero.  

Yue Qingyuan was certainly giving him opportunities.  Shang Qinghua could feel his gaze, and right now, it was lingering on Shang Qinghua’s face.  Wrong place to look, really.  Everyone knew you were supposed to watch the hands.  You never knew when they’d reach for a weapon.

Shang Qinghua, in particular, always had a knife up his sleeve. If he flicked his wrist in a certain way, it would slide into his grasp, and then he’d be fully armed.  Yue Qingyuan was right there, not half as suspicious he should be, and it would be so easy to step forward and --

The small boy genuflects then spins and hurries away. Abyssal black eyes watch him poke his head through the ornate doors, looking left and right, before finally departing the room he had so discourteously entered without permission.

Its sole inhabitant smiles, the first true smile in a very, very long time.

I actually don't know because what I wanna do is romfan-ify canon tcf plot more to fit the villainess au but to do that I need to reread tcf, which I haven't done in literal years. What I can determine is that by the time Cale receives the book the plot has already begun, KRS is already in Roan and has met the ml (Alberu) so Cale will be making his first appearance very soon. I need to figure out the plot beats of the book to decide how Cale would react immediately after reading it. Most likely, his focus would be on saving his family over whatever face-slapping KRS was supposed to give him.
