o hi hi!!! i think we went a little overboard with the word count i assume those are supposed to be like. 500 words. or something. but it's fine. it's fine
i love misery & contradictory beliefs
there were no regrets to be had. everything he had done, he had done with a most noble goal in mind - unattainable yet glistening weakly still before him at times, when he would close his eyes and the night was dark enough for the memories to appear as translucent ghosts, just far enough to be barely out of reach. it had been folly. he knew this to be true. heβd known this to be true for a long, long time. even then he would not take back a single action heβd done. it was all worth it once upon a time. he would not do it any different.
things had gotten to where they were because of them. it had all been worth it. it was still worth it. it was worth it when he could turn toward the door and offer a curt smile to the warrior as he finally returned from his latest adventures, when he could hold him in his arms when he could no longer support himself on his own from exhaustion, when he could bring him to bed and gaze upon him once he fell asleep.
it was worth it. he could not allow himself to regret the circumstances that led them there.
even as hildegardeβs skin chipped and cracked in a different spot every other day. time and time again he would fuss over him and work to mend what fissures he could, all the while being told it βwasnβt that badβ. the one across the heroβs nose never seemed to react to his magicks. it stared him in the face uncomfortably but he dared not look away. he stared back. he stared until hildegarde would reach his hand up to cup his cheek, thumb brushing against shallow cheekbone. and heβd smile.
β Itβs fine. I think itβsβ¦ become part of my charm. Hasnβt it? It can stay. β
β It is far too bright in the night, β he would mumble in response, feigning disinterested annoyance. β I prefer complete darkness when I sleep, you know this. β
β Iβll just bury my face in your chest deeper then. β
and hildegarde would chuckle. and he couldnβt help but feel the corners of his lips tug upwards despite himself.
when hildegardeβs reserves of aether suffered of overuse, when he struggled to get them back up unless he devoured a buffet or simply fed on another manβs, it was all worth it even then. heβd shamble toward the ancient, mouth agape through which stifled breaths would come in and out while his eyes unfocused, and rest his hands on his much taller, much broader shoulders. heβd straddle his lap. heβd tug at his turtleneckβs collar, looking up into that piercing golden gaze expectantlyβ¦ and with a hint of desperation.
β Iβm sorry. May I? β
β I could quite do without the apologyβ¦ Of course you may. β he chastised lightly with a sigh, angling his chin upwards for easier access. β But do not make a mess, if you please. β
yes, staining his clothes with bloodβ¦ it wouldnβt wash away so easily. it was hardly a legitimate concern, though ; with a soul as dense as his, just a few drops tended to be enough to stabilise hildegardeβs aether.
β And be more careful next time. β
and when the au raβs legs could no longer carry him, refusing to obey him, well, it was worth it as well. at least it forced him to rest for once. it allowed his beloved some time to dote on him. he would check on the prosthetic, fix up whatever was now refusing to function, andβ¦ as for the other leg, it simply needed time to get accustomed to being hildegardeβs leg again. it forgot, at times. it had always been his, but while the lightβs corruption was long gone from his body, it was something it remembered. and sometimes itβd stop obeying. memories made it stagnant.
because he wouldβve never met with the happiness that came with the hardships had he not done what heβd done, he regretted nothing.Β
there was no room for regret in emet-selchβs mind, no matter how much it weighed down his heart. how regretβs claws dug deep into the tendrils. guilt. if the sentiment ever made it to his head, he shoved it down his own throat with his bare hands. if it overflowed and stained them, he would simply have to cover them up with gloves. then heβd never have to acknowledge any of it.
β Hades, β a hushed voice whispers, claws gently dragging against the skin of his arm - a sensation which sends a shiver running down his spine and pulls him right out of his thoughts. he looks over to his side, andβ¦ there he is. β Youβd have an easier time falling asleep if you laid downβ¦ β
hildegarde, light ever shining across his face and in his eye, is looking up at him with the same fondness he always does. it brings him momentary solace. his own gaze softens.
β Whatβs keeping you? From sleeping, I mean. β
β Please. Nothing is keeping me frβ β
β You are sitting there awake intentionally? Oh, Iβm sureβ¦ β hildegarde rolls his eyes and stirs, propping himself up on his elbow. his hand moves up hadesβ arm to rub his shoulder some. β You donβt have to tell me but you donβt have to lie either. Iβm not stupid. β
hades canβt help but bite on the inside of his cheek. right. many times heβd believably lied in the past, but it never seemed to work on hildegardeβ¦ not anymore. there was comfort in being known, but there was apprehension too. there was fear.
he liked being seen by hildegarde. he didnβt like knowing hildegarde could read him better than anyone else.
bringing himself closer, hildegarde soon wraps his arms around him, pushing him down onto the bed and resting his head against his chest, where he could hear his heartbeat. it was something hades knew unsettled him, yet he kept listening anyway⦠for how easily hildegarde seemed to understand him, the warrior of light remained a mystery in many aspects to him. how could he love him so?
he, who had caused him irreparable grief. who was unrepentant in the face of his own deeds. who still claimed firmly he meant all of it and regretted none of it.
despite everything, his greatest enemy, his dearest companion loves him.
and he simply cannot comprehend it.
the horn presses lightly against his chest for a few moments before hildegarde shifts around, forcing them into a hug while bringing the blanket over them. he then buries his face in his chestβ¦ as heβd said he would. he forgot a lot, but these little attentions were things he always seemed to keep in mind. he remembered what hades would complain about, and heβd act around it.
mindfulness. truthfully, it infuriated him to the point he wished to vanish more often than not.
β Just sleep. Okay? You canβt make me a delicious breakfast, or whatever it is you do on mornings, if you wake up hours after I do. Perhaps Iβll have eaten the entire fridge by then. β
hildegarde yawns. he closes his eyes again, his expression now content.
hades can only watch him for a few moments. or mayhap they were minutes.
there is no room for regret in emet-selchβs mind.
I love you.
and it had all been worth it.
Iβm sorry.
a soft kiss leaves a mildly humid mark on hildegardeβs forehead, prompting him to smile as he drifts.
π₯ whatβs something thatβs currently going really well?
For the fic asks!
oh boy. π¬ what is currently going really well when it comes to my writing? I feel like it's been a while since I felt like writing was "going well."
I guess I can say that it's at least happening and I've got some of the tickle of actually wanting to do it back (as opposed to feeling like I have to), if not as much as I'd like.

bother bother bother i'm bothering you with ask box activity.
tell me about ria's first impression of sebastian versus when their romance begins.
You mean other than the "hate to see you go/love to watch you walk away" eyes she was making when he stormed passed her that morning at the chanters board? Cause her first-first impression based only on that scene was hawt. There was no reason for it. Nothing he'd done was specifically sexy. But he was passionate, had an accent, and happened to walk by at just the right time.
... unfortunately, I haven't decided yet when their relationship actually Begins, so I can't answer the second half of this. Ria and Sebastian themselves will consider their first night together the beginning/their anniversary but really, the relationship was fully involved long before that whether they admit it or not. Without having the right moment identified, I can't say what impression she'd have of him.
I'm not giving up on this answer, I just have to do a lot of thinking. Ask again for the second half in like ... 4 months and I might know. That'll give me 2 months to think, one for ADHD to forget ever existed, then in that fourth month I can give a final answer π
