1951 #Fender #Nocaster photographed courtesy of the owner, @iamtheosdad. . the finish was stripped in the 60s and the grain looks so tight because the ash is quartersawn. As promised Last #TeleTuesday, here is @iamtheosdad’s early 1951 #Nocaster with its Bakelite pickguard removed. You can see it’s an early example because there’s no diagonal rout for the pickup wires that would be found on a #Telecaster. This lack of rout would more typically be seen on a #Broadcaster rather than on a #Tele. . Also interesting is the maple (rather than walnut) truss rod plug (see photo 2). And here it is...the 1951 #Fender #Nocaster belonging to @iamtheosdad. . As presaged by @sirjamesofthebronx in yesterday’s post, you can see the grain on the body looks oddly tight and linear - very unlike your average ash-bodied #Telecaster. This is due to the wood having been “quarter-sawn”...very unusual indeed because while quarter-sawing makes for a stronger board, but you get fewer boards out of a log (i.e. it’s more expensive). . Mostly original (except for the stripped finish and a refret) it’s lightweight and sounds lively and rich through Matt’s Swart amp. As you’ll see in a future post, the body is quite early, as it has routs typical of a Broadcaster rather than a #Tele. . So why “Nocaster”? When Fender had to stop using the Broadcaster name (thanks a lot Gretsch! 😂) they didn’t want to waste any Broadcaster headstock decals before switching over to the the new Telecaster decals (Fender is famous for never throwing anything away when they could repurpose it), so they just snipped off the word Broadcaster and applied the word “Fender” by itself to the headstock! The headstocks didn’t say Broadcaster or Telecaster, so this interim incarnation became known as the “Nocaster”.
