17. âLooks like weâll be trapped for a whileâŚâ
Shepard yawned as he left Engineering. They still had a few hours before they got to Omega. Plenty of time for a quick nap.
Just as the elevator doors were closing, a big, meaty, three-fingered hand shot in between them, startling them back open. Shepard raised an eyebrow, then nodded to himself as Grunt came lumbering in after his hand. âHey, Grunt,â he said, automatically raising a hand to the console again. âMess hall?â
Grunt nodded with a, well, grunt. âWhatâre you doing down here, Shepard?â
Shepard shrugged and tapped the button for the crew deck. âI was talking to Tali. Weâll be dropping by Omega to help Samara with something in a few hours, feel like coming along?â
âOnly if we get to shoot something this time.â Grunt growled and shook his head as the elevator groaned and started its ascent.
Shepard nodded to himself. Fair enough. The last mission Grunt had gotten brought along on had been a jaunty jog around Illium, running favors for Liara and not getting in fights. He could understand why Grunt might be a little antsy.
Suddenly, there was a creak, and a shriek, and a shudder, and the elevator stopped. Shepard stumbled as the metal box shook, and grabbed hold of the console to stabilize himself. âEDI, whatâs going on?â he barked. The AI could hear him in here, right?
Thankfully, yes. âAnalyzing... Iâm sorry, Shepard, but the elevator has suffered a physical malfunction.â
Shepard stiffened, sharing a look with Grunt. âWhat kind of physical malfunction?â
âIt would appear that one of the gears responsible for moving the elevator has become stuck.â
âIsnât this ship brand new?â Grunt snapped. Shepard had to agree.
âEngineer Donnelly has complained about slapdash construction of the SR-2 on multiple occasions,â EDI mused. âIt is possible this is another consequence of Cerberus attempting to upgrade from the SR-1 in such a short period of time.â
A new voice rose from Shepardâs omni-tool. âThatâs what you get when you put a businessman in charge of an engineering project,â Daniels said. âYou ask for a rush job, you get a bad job. Donât worry, Shepard, EDI already told us whatâs up. She patched us in to your omni-tool so we can talk. Weâll have you guys out of there in a jiffy.â
Shepard shook his head with a scowl. âOnce we get the Collectors taken care of, weâre taking this ship in for going-over with a fine-tooth comb,â he told Grunt, leaning back against the wall and sliding to the floor. âLooks like weâll be trapped for a while. Hope you werenât too hungry.â
