Ruby never really has an issue with beauty. He is absolutely vain and superficial, but not to the point where it’s an overwhelming character flaw. Mumu and Feefee are ugly pokemon, that’s acknowledged, and Ruby does point this out, but this doesn’t make him some kind of monster, it just makes him pragmatic (plus he’s as loving and protective over them as any other team member). This post is getting long so I guess my point is: the “do you understand true beauty” plotline is :/ imo because it’s only working on the superficial cause of the issue: Ruby acts out negatively towards Feefee when under stress. He lashes out at numerous people (Wallace, Sapphire, Norman, etc) when threatened or in a stressful situation but is otherwise caring towards them: that doesn’t reflect a misunderstanding of the “meaning of beauty”, only that Ruby doesn’t have the emotional stability to be collected under stress and isn’t perceptive of others’ feelings. THAT is a trauma related character flaw, and both his treatment of Feefee, Sapphire, and even himself in times of crisis are tied back to that. I know that the “true beauty” thing is easier to fix narratively, but I wish that they really dug out the root of his bad behavior instead

This is the best girl Faith, who we also call Feefee. She had a mass in a mammary gland that burst and needs surgery. The summer is a lean time for us and we're scraping together what we can but we just don't have enough. He hurt Feefee’s feelings which is obviously uncalled for but in his effort to get her back he just… opens up the possibility of letting all his other pokemon get crushed by rocks. My man’s tunnel vision would be downright impressive if it weren’t so dangerous
