REALLY DIFFICULT TO DECIDE

fan or not: I am a fan? Am I a fan now? I mean I listen to them, I like them, I watch their mvs???

how long i’ve been a fan: I’ve been listening to them tangentially since the beginning of being a kpop fan, but I only very recently got really into them and maybe got biases. 

the first song i heard by them: No Idea but probably Peek-A-Boo

my favourite song as of now: Really Bad Boy, but I also like Bad Boy (lol), Look, Peek-a-boo, Kingdom Come, Perfect 10 💕💦. 

the first mv i saw: Really Bad Boy I think?

my favourite mv as of now: Still love RBB, but I love a lot of their vids especially how they use horror tropes and colour (I know you want to write about this academically Bee and this is my chance to say YES YES DO THAT DO THAT THING!!!) 

who my bias is: Irene & Seulgi!!! (but I LOVE Yeri..and Joy..and Wendy 🥺🥵🥰)

But YES she wrote a great introductory paper on the use of Gothic aesthetics/narratives in Kpop so she covered Monster, but also Taemin’s Thirsty, (and Tae in general!). It was awesome. We’ve actually been tossing around the idea of co-writing a collection of academic papers/a book on Kpop MVs for a few months now. It would be so cool if we could! Even if we published it ourselves!

Hahaha. I will admit, it’s a good friendship, I’m quite happy with it: we are essentially friends because Edie came to give a paper at a conference I was hosting, and I thought she has hella cool and I decided we should be friends. As we discovered as we got to know each other, we have a lot of shared interests. I am essentially a black hole when it comes to fandom and interests: I consume media constantly, and if I’m interested in something I just absorb everything about it like a sponge. Luckily she found this endearing, and actually enjoys discussing the finer points of Star Wars and Final Fantasy for hours on end. As she’s mentioned before, a few months ago I’d started working on an academic paper analysing the Monster MV and asked if she’d watch the video for me to see if my arguments checked out. (I’d been silently mass consuming kdrama and kpop for a few years by this point and it had gotten lonely… kidding, I knew she’d love it.) And the rest is history!We have a lot in common, but we’re actually very different: Edie is warm, expressive and very tactile, and I am very much not that. But I think we balance each other out, and it makes us a really good pair. She’s great at getting emotionally engaged and thinking about the feelings of a thing, and I can remember verbatim how tall every member of Exo is. And how wide Sehun’s shoulders are.”

From Edie: Bee and I have been friends for a couple of years now and she’s such a cool friend to have. She’s really patient and kind, but can also flare up like a firecracker and get really focused on TOTAL DESTRUCTION, and I always love that in people! If someone hurts a person Bee loves she will DESTROY THEM. She’s very protective and fierce and that makes you feel very loved when you’re the person she’s protecting. She’s also like, insanely cute, (she probably hates me saying it) so it’s fun watching people assume she has a ‘cutey pie’ personality to match her looks! Hahaha surprise suckers! As far as our Kpop relationship, I had tried to get into Kpop several years earlier, through my accidental discovery of Suju’s SPY (and then D&E’s banger Oppa Oppa), but it hadn’t really taken. Then Bee asked me to look at Monster at like 11pm one night while I was in London at a conference, and boy, lack of sleep and the sheer power of that MV just ruined me. Within 24 hours I’d memorised all of EXO and made cheat sheets on the train home of who was singing at what point in the song: 

I fell into kpop hard, and it’s totally her fault. I often tell her I love her for getting me into Kpop, and alternatively tell her I hate her for getting me into kpop (you know what its like!). 

We’re both very similar to our ults/biases so she often has to ‘put up’ with me, as I’m quite energetic and lively (as well as being quite low/cynical at times) so I owe her a lot for suffering me on the daily. She’s also CRAZY GOOD at predicting people’s biases. She told me from day 1 that I’d like Minseok and about 2 months later I had to come to her, hanging my head, admitting that yes, I’d changed biases again and had decided I loved Minnie the most. She just smiled and said “I KNEW IT”. I never had friends in fandom growing up and whilst we have a quite large friend group between us, I love my 1-on-1 kpop time with Bee. She’s just the best. 🥰
