The Art of Criticism: How to Tell the Good from the Bad
There’s nothing quite like going to a critique group, and hearing yourself critiqued. I swear, sometimes it’s like an out of body experience. And that’s regardless if the critiques are good or bad.
But how do you tell if a critique is good or bad? Quite frankly, you listen, and you pay attention to the following:
Is Your Feedback Partner Passionate About Your Story: When in doubt, always go with the person who’s the most passionate about your story. Something you wrote connected with them in a new way, which is why they’re not just talking, they’re shouting feedback. They care, and if you want your readers to care too, you’ll listen.
Does the Feedback Sound Like Something You’ve Thought of Before: If it does, it’s probably because you were worried something wouldn’t translate and congrats, thanks to your critique group, you know it doesn’t.
Does it Make You Think of Something New: Feedback that inspires, that makes you think of a new way to express yourself, is always worthwhile. Whether it’s meant for the story you’re getting critiqued on, or the next.
Not all feedback is substantial and not all of it should necessarily be taken into consideration, but any feedback like that is definitely worth taking into consideration. Trust me.
Happy Writing!

Oh, Kris. The wedding night was PERFECT. You tied it all, perfectly, together. I'm sitting here, an absolute mess of happiness. From Tom using "upstaged" to the moment in front of the mirror. From their beginning to their, well, not really end, but the next step. I'm swooning, because it was lovely, LOVING Tabby at it's finest. The care they have for each other was so brilliantly apparent. So well done, love. Just gorgeous.
Perfect?! Ah, thank you. It's been living in my head for so long, that it's a bit of a relief to have it out. I'm so ecstatic that it made you happy. That's the highest compliment, since Tom and Abby have been through so much, they deserved a happy ending to single life and beginning to married life. I love full circles and balances in stories. I had to bring upstaged into it, probably my favorite title of all of Tom and Abby's updates.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I'm overwhelmed that you liked it that much! xx
{And So All Yours}
My favorite words were the ones that I wrote to you They were made in such an order that made them special I can’t remember them anymore They are gone You never heard them
