  In many nations a computer may be purchased for less than one tenth of a month’s wage - and with access to internet that is the only needed expense to give everything required to study secondary, high school, and at university level so, while I continue to applaud Microsoft for the fine development of their products do give thought to working with an operating system like Fedora after your next computer purchase.

Fedora and Dell Inspiron 17

I recently had to reinstall an OS on the wife’s Dell Inspiron 17. I was unable to complete an install for Fedora 22, but Fedora 21 and Fedora 23 beta were able to install. It would always freeze mid-install – usually around 70 or 80%. From what I could gleam on the net, it has to do with a kernel issue. But I’m not 100% sure. Anyway, just putting this out there for anyone trying to get Fedora 22…

Another Fedora Print Debugging Tip

The wife told me she couldn’t print from her computer. Sure enough, I couldn’t print from mine either. I tried the trick from last time and ran

system-config-selinux

but selinux wasn’t responsible this time. So I removed the printer and this time I added it through the cups website: localhost:631. After doing that it worked.

Ubuntu… Oh, Ubuntu…

So apparently installing the KDE desktop onto my Ubuntu-running PC was a Bad Idea. Very bad. It doesn’t run properly. It’s slow, and it really doesn’t work with the fact that my display is being Utterly Ridiculous. I have (I’m fairly sure) a normal LG 16:9 42″ TV. I’m using it as my display, and ergo it should be able to auto-detect the TV and scale it properly. Except it won’t. It will not scale…
