After more than 5 months of plotting and working, I finally finished and gifted a Noah St. Claire scarf to @featheredthings. Knit on US 5, using Berroco Folio (Balsam Fir color), ~1.5 oz. Inspired by a scarf from The Silver Eye by Laura Hollingsworth.

Many thanks to @lover-of-the-starkindler for inciting and encouraging this project, not to mention abounding in patience as I sent her messages pretty much every step of the way. And for acting as a sounding board, especially when I was panicking over the fact the drawn scarf didn’t look like how I thought it should for how I was planning to knit it...

Thanks also to @maysartcorner, who finished her scarf first, and then kindly let me come pester her about it. It helped a lot to compare notes and I felt more confident knowing that my plan for the scarf coincided with her experience!

The story of how I realized Beatrice was the Baudelaire’s mom is actually hilarious. (*Lemony Snicket voice* hilarious here, my dear tumblr friends, is used to describe a circumstance that was painful and bitterly ironic and forever changed the way she looked at the world, and so, in fact, not hilarious at all.) I didn't realize it until 4 or five years after I’d finished reading the last book. Or I thought I’d finished reading the last book.

You know how chapter 13 of The End is made to look like the actually ending of the book? But it’s not and there’s really a 14th chapter which is the true ending? Yeah, I didn’t know about that. See, I was upset about Kit dying (SHE WAS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER--second to Klaus--AND STILL IS--still second to Klaus--WHYY) and the Baudelaire’s being stranded on an island with the orphaned baby girl (WHYYY). This was also one of the first books I’d read that had a not-happy ending. So when I reached what I thought was the end, I SLAMMED the book shut, SHOVED it back on the shelf, and NEVER wanted to look at it again. (I'd reread all the other books over and over, but not that one.)

Fastforward to when I'm 14. I'm explaining to some people who didn't read the books about the dedications/epitaphs to Beatrice. I grab the books and lug them downstairs so I can read the dedications to them. I also share Lemony Snicket’s bios with them, while I’m at it.

I flip to the back of book 13...and for the first time I notice there’s a lot of empty pages after the end. Huh, that weird. I turn a page or two, and see a type-writer typed note from Lemony Snicket to his editor. “The end of The End can be found at the end of The End.” Haha, classic Lemony.

I flick the rest of the pages under my finger, on my way to closing the book, and--HOLD UP, WAIT, ARE THERE MORE WORDS????

what.

“If it is a girl we will name her Violet, if it is a boy we will name her Lemony.”

wHAT. Their mom and dad knew Lemony?? (and they apparently thought he was dead????)

“The day for departure arrived”

WHAT. THEY’RE LEAVING?? ALL THIS TIME, AND THEY WEREN’T STRANDED FOREVER???

AND THEN THE BOAT WAS NAMED AFTER THEIR MOM, AND THE BAUDELAIRE’S HAVE A TRADITION OF NAMING BABY’S AFTER PEOPLE THEY KNEW WHO DIED, AND KIT’S BABY LOOKS AT THE NAMEPLATE AND SAYS A WORD WHICH MIHGT HAVE BEEN HER READING THE BOAT’S NAME OR JUST SAYING HER OWN NAME.

AND THE WORD

THE WORD WAS BEATRICE.

WHICH MEANS BEATRICE WAS THEIR MOM.

Favorite character - All of them! No but really, I have such a hard time picking a fav...cause I have different faves based on different things? I’ll just go with Apen for now tho I guess? xD

Second favorite character - This goes for the same above? Like...so many??? I, I...I’ll go with...Berlyne??? xD

Least favorite character - Oh my gosh I was going to say Aetius (cause he’s a jerk but also fun?) but how about....THE KYLO REN GUARD! Cause he stabbed Bay and didn’t he also threaten Ansam cause....NOT OKAY BRO! xD

The character I’m most like - Enel or Chara, probably a little more Chara xD

Favorite pairing - Dude it’s like the closest tie between Gutair and Runo I love them both and they are like the ships we know the least about pffft xD

Least favorite pairing - Gudrun and Joshua and Noah and Berlyne cause...they get in the way of my otps.....xD

Favorite moment - WAT? ONE FAVORITE MOMENT WAT? I can’t choose...I just...I...how about just...Chapter 12 cause that was some epic action...Imma go with that cause I can’t pick just one xD

1) Blanche Brier from the Fairy Tale Novels: I’m currently rereading The Shadow of the Bear and I have a new appreciation for her, especially for how she tries to be wise and careful and how she carries all her fear.

2) Mercy Rios from The Ashtown Burials: She’s not had a lot of page time, but I loved her right away - she doesn’t know how to give up, despite everything she’s been through.

3) Kate Sutton from The Perilous Gard: She’s honest and steadfast - and very relatable.

4) Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist: She has a lot of good traits, but one that particularly stands out is how she takes responsibility for her actions.

5) Steris Harms from the Wax & Wayne series: She doesn’t see the world the same way as most other people, but she’s aware of it and doesn’t let it stop her.

6) Anne Eliot from Persuasion: She doesn’t waste a lot of time wishing about what might have been, instead finding grace and strength to do what is needed where she is at.

7) Winter Blackburn from The Lunar Chronicles: She chooses the hard thing when it is the right thing to do.

8) Sidonie from In the Forests of Serre: She neither resigns herself to her fate nor tries to run away from it, instead taking it in both hands and doing what is necessary.

9) B’Elanna Torres from Star Trek: Voyager: She’s stubborn and strong - and was the first female engineer I remember seeing on TV.

10) Officer Flossy Fox from the Richard Scarry books: She keeps law and order on a bicycle, and is very dedicated.
