always thought that the line of feanor was started as a matriarchy, not the typical patriarchy. finwe is the father of all three of his sons, but for the longest time the ones he was close to and directly influenced were finarfin and fingolfin. most of feanor's influence was from miriel, his spirit of fire, his emotions, etc. i think that feanor was miriel's son more than he was finwe's son. her spirit and her essence always existed in feanor's own fae and his household, and due to that, i think that he followed her teachings and will, not finwe's.
i also think that the house of feanor in itself was not as patriarchal as the other finwean houses, because canonically nerdanel and feanor were on equal footing and both influenced each other (until the valar/morgoth started harassing feanor). until then, feanor valued any and everything nerdanel had to say and that probably went into how they raised their children.
like miriel, nerdanel was not royalty/nobility and she wasn't a princess. she was very down to earth, and her thought process did not exist in patriarchal ways that we see mirrored in some elven families. Nerdanel influenced her children a lot, which is why they are a mixture of creative, kind, wise, etc.
it says a lot that feanor did not value nerdanel because she was the fairest of the land (which imo he probably actually thought that she was) or that she was overly elegant, beautiful or a princess, but because she counseled him, and she was wise, and whatever she said he took to heart. and i think that when it came to raising their sons and formulating the household, nerdanel had a strong presence.
all this to say they didn't operate like the typical royal or noble household. Feanor was more Miriel's son than he was Finwe's.
