Kurt fell to the ground on his hands and knees. At least he had reacted in enough time to keep him from falling on his face. The hard concrete meeting soft flesh and unyielding bone jolted his joints, but heād been through worse. A bit of momentary pain, and it was over. He was wearing his costume--gloves included--so there there shouldnāt even be a scrape.
He started to get up, only to be nearly hit by a yellow taxi cab. His arms instinctively raised to cover his face, but his mutation took care of the rest. It was simple survival instinct. With an explosion of purple sulfur, he was gone.
The problem with teleporting blind was, as he had been reminded of just seconds before, there was no way to tell where he was going. This time, he re-entered in a heap right in the middle of a crowd watching a street performer. The people gasped, screamed, and stepped back. Some simply left.
He felt his fur stand up on the back of his neck as heat crept up his spine. No matter how many times it happened, no matter how okay he was with his own body, reactions like this still hurt.Ā āItās all right.ā He tried to smile, standing up.Ā āItās all part of the show!ā Ever the showman, he was doing handstands, cartwheels, back- and forward-handsprings, somersaults, and everything in between. The other performer took his earnings and left, but Kurt stayed. Climbing up onto a street light, he announced,Ā āCome one, come all, and see the Winding Way Circusās very own Nightcrawler!ā
āThatās him!ā
Kurtās head turned to see the performer pointing at him, accompanied by two of New Yorkās finest.Ā
Time for a quick exit. He attempted to teleport, but a bullet whizzed past, nicking his bicep. It threw off his concentration, so he ran. He teleported once he got his head cleared, and he kept on running, eventually careening into a young woman in scarlet.Ā āDu lieber Himmel!ā The words spilled out of his mouth before he had a chance to think about them.Ā āEs tut mir leid! I am so sorry! Are you all right?ā
