Halloween Supplemental - The Straw Man

The Fear Lord known as The Straw Man is a mostly benevolent entity who has appeared in numerous occasions to defend humankind from the demonic entity known as Kalumai.  

When Kalumai first invaded earth, The Straw Man defeated the demon and ripped from its head one of its horns.  He then trapped the demon in a limbo-like dimension, sealing it within a mysterious painting of a scarecrow.  The Straw Man can take any form, but usually appears as an animated scarecrow similar to that depicted in the painting.  

Over the years, mystics have attempted to unleash Kalumai and gain power by doing the demon’s bidding.  Usually this involves efforts to obtain the painting of the scarecrow and perform a ritual that will unleash the demon.  On each time, The Straw Man has reappeared to ensure Kalumai remains trapped.   

Like the other Fear Lords, The Straw Man is an entity that lives and feeds off of the fear experienced by humankind.  Unlike the others, however, The Straw Man represents the more beneficial aspects of fear (the emotion’s capacity to instill caution and to offer enjoyable thrills).  In the build up to the Fear Itself event, where The Serpent was planning to conquer Midgard through extreme fear, The Straw Man came to earth and hosted a creature feature television show.  Herein, The Straw Man hoped to better inoculate humans to the kind of fear The Serpent was marshaling.

They are first introduced as Fear Lords in Sorcerer Supreme #31-33, according to the epilogue “Book of the Vishanti - A Gathering of Fear”, which will later lead to the arc “The Great Fear”, in Sorcerer Supreme #38-40.
