Tonight I'm rooting for Viggo Mortensen. I think all the Best Actor nominees are deserving but in Captain Fantastic, Mortensen showed me a performance I've never seen anyone give before. And I have a theory that Casey Affleck and Denzel Washington are going to split the vote and Mortensen will win a la Adrien Brody in 2003. I've read the Anon Oscar voter stuff and heard what voters said at parties: people have stated they voted for him. We'll see what happens. HAPPY 40th BIRTHDAY, REESE WITHERSPOON! (Do I have Wreath Witherspoon for the Holidays? Oh course I do.) I have so much respect for her as an actress and producer. She doesn't just play awesome and ambitious ladies like Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) and Tracy Flick (Election). I love her commitment to producing films that bring great roles for women to the screen with Type A Films-- Gone Girl and Wild have done just that. The film adaptation of Wild, which stars Witherspoon as Cheryl Strayed, is brutally honest and beautiful poignant. Her performance is equally as moving. Everyone should pick it up at Redbox and read the book, too. I have posted a picture of her with her Best Actress Oscar because it's a performance I particularly love. Some have criticized that Witherspoon did not look enough like June Carter Cash for the role but identical resemblance has never been a factor I find too essential to a great biopic. Witherspoon's performance really captured the qualities that made Carter Cash a beautiful woman with a lot of strength, spunk, smarts, and a unique style and sophistication-- that's far more important than looking just like her. Not to mention, she was very funny and her vocals sounded great. I listen to the Walk the Line soundtrack almost as much as I listen to the real Johnny and June Carter Cash. This is not just one of my favorite Oscar wins but favorite film performances.
