Superhero AUs…
Okay, ADMITTEDLY. I have been obsessed with the idea of superpowers as of recent. We’ll just say I am burying myself in a rabbit hole of research and influence on the topic.
Which brings me to…badadabum! Sk8 the infinity superhero AU. Or my take on one. I want to write a fic about this at some point as well as a fic dedicated to cherry and reki father and son type dynamic. All good things in time. First: I must write about the chaotic rivals/enemies to found family dynamic that is ADAM Marrying Masae, becoming Reki’s stepdad and all that comes with that. (Thank you to sk8er and ADAM roleplay blog for that inspiration and giving me permission to write it, just as an aside.)
ANYWAY so super power au. I’ve seen quite a few. There was a super hero au fic I read a few years ago that I still can’t find…but loved the hell of. I’ve seen and read more super au based fics. So now here I am with my own ideas/take on AU so here I am to talk about it.
REKI KYAN:
I’ve seen it generally be done that Reki be powerless, or have fire powers. And I can understand why, Fire is associated with passion and Reki is nothing if not a passionate skater, powerless makes sense when you consider his issues with self esteem and comparing himself to others. However in my AU, I was considering giving him Atmokinesis. For those who don’t know what that is, cause I had to explain it to a friend who didn’t know the power had a name. Atmokinesis is the power to manipulate weather and atmospheric conditions.
BUT, why?
I could give him analysis abilities, I could give him Technokinesis (manipulation of tech) for all his similarities with Cherry and his place as a mechanic, or hell even give him Depictukinesis (Manipulation of art related media.) or Xylokinesis (manipulation of wood). Like hell the boy has options when you think about it. So why Atmokinesis?
This part was inspired by the arc in the show where Reki begins feeling depressed, and he and Langa start drifting apart, then they have their argument. And Reki thinking he deserves all the pain—yeah the angsty bit. All I could think of was how much it rained when Reki was sad (side note I love noticing the detail on my second watch when Reki first begins feeling sad and Koyomi tells their mother about how it is going to rain later. Then when Reki and Langa finally made up and Koyomi said it would be a sunny day. That was fun :3), and I know logistically that the rain is to set the emotional tone. This character is sad, and rain is associated with sadness. Anyway so my idea is as follows:
Reki’s concept for my au and power wise are as follows: a good portion of the storyline in the AU are dormant. They aren’t active, he thinks he’s powerless. Everyone assumes he’s powerless. He’s just the mechanic of sorts. A support guy for the heroes in the au, perhaps make him a bit vigilante in nature. Then In what I consider the equivalent of the ‘King vs Nobody’ race. Is when Reki discovers/the triggering of his atmokinesis.
LANGA HASEGAWA:
Langa’s…is a bit more or less on the nose. Though his powers are plural. He technically has two is what I’m thinking. Cryokinesis, ya know just manipulation of Ice. Nothing too shocking with him, HOWEVER. I also want to play on his lil yeti motif a but. In this why I am giving him a super specific ‘Yeti/Abdominal snowman’ form. It is 5’0 nothing, looks like the logo thing on his board but realistic. Has the attributes/strengths of a Himalayan brown bear.
Why a Himalayan brown bear?
Before it was called the yeti, it was known originally in the Himalayas as a bear man of sorts. Plus the Himalayas is where the story originated, naturally I would base it off there as much as I can as humanly possible. Despite the fact Langa being from Canada.
Thus Langa gets Cryokinesis and a yeti form he can shift into. Perhaps unique metabolic needs with that. In the AU he’ll become the hero in training ‘Snow’. I am trying to figure out if I want him to know of his powers prior, or if in the fight (what would’ve been ‘race’ in the original…) against Shadow is when he awakens it. I would’ve tried to do something more unique with them, but being a cold coded character is excessively heavy with him so I just couldn’t think of anything more to do with him. For now though he has some ideas going and The Yeti form is a w.i.p much like most of this.
HIROMI HIGA:
SHADOW oh boy, did I have to do some thinking on this one. ‘Cause like I could’ve left him powerless. Made him a powerless person that just bombs shit. But noooo I considered other options. Like Chlorokinesis (manipulation of plant life) which would’ve tied in beautifully with his occupation as a florist me thinks. I could’ve done a surprising amount with Shadow…like he had a surprising amount to work with all things considered. Yet I couldn’t be happier with what I decided to go with for him.
So without further ado…I figured why not mix the best of both worlds? Give him Chemokinesis (power to manipulate chemicals) and have him carry vials of various chemicals on him. Which he could then use to make stuff like bombs, or other chemical based warfare. It’s destructive but we gotta be real, as silly as he is …in canon he still quite literally bombs other racers off track. We love him off track but he’s scary on it.
As far as role can be considered. I’m thinking ‘anti-hero’, he’s literally branded as such in the anime like…once or a few times. So anti-hero but i’m making it literal here. Originally I considered villain to hero reform. But Chaotic Anti-hero seemed best here.
MIYA CHINEN:
YET ANOTHER CHARACTER THAT HAD A LOT GOING FOR HIM IN THE REALM OF POWERS. Could make Miya a human cat kinda thing. could give him thiriokinesis (manipulation of animals), Could give him some kind of video game based power, Or I could—
Okay! you get the point. But I have made my decision!
Shape shifter, specifically he can shift into mammalian animals, he out of most of his forms he favors the form of a cat (felis catus), in addition depending on the form he is in, it allows him to talk to other specific animals. Think: Miya is in cat form. Now he can talk to cats but not dogs. Hell he probably shifts into a fennec fox to talk to Sketchy.
Naturally for his fighting style, I had to give him something fit of someone in okinawa. Was thinking Tegumi for it. Also another thing natural is his role. He —much like Langa—is a superhero in training, specifically tapping into the whole fact that in the show ADAM is the one who brought him into S, Miya in this AU is likely to have been a sort of villain in training. But is then eventually converted into a hero in training. What would’ve been his beef with langa in the anime is more like an exam/test of sorts in this.
