the similarities i can find is; parallels, faust with gretchen (if you've read faust) and heathcliff with catherine. gretchen falls in love with faust due to loneliness, inexperience, resentment of her mother. she is betrayed by her own idealistic naivety, and in the other hand, in wuthering heights, cathy and heathcliff maintain a toxic relationship too. cathy plays with him out of boredom, he gets too obsessive and possesive, they both end up doing horrible things to themselves and those around them who not only serve as collateral damage; yet both faust and gretchen alongside heathcliff and cathy get to have a sort of sick and twisted realization at the end, throughout death and salvation, even if these also are harmful. there's also the fact goethe also wrote der erlkoning.

setting beside book heathie and book faust, the main tie i find in heathcliff and faust are that they both are too blunt. they speak what they think directly. faust is described as oppressive to talk with, while heath's lack of subtlety needs no introduction. they both have trouble hiding what they feel and what they want to do even if one of them arguably knows how to cover it up. but at the same time, there are no thoughts, as funny as it sounds. faust relies too much on the gesselschaft, heathcliff relies too much on the ghosts of his past; even if both hurt them severely.

which leads to yet another point; there is a vital lack of autonomy, they both are haunted by people that are not them, at cases yes it can be their own self. faust is a vessel, heathcliff is prey. faust is the dumb faust, heathcliff is the dumb dog. they're the lowest in their hierarches and henceforth face the most opression. faust tries to be better, she tries to be what is expected of her, does not fight back. she is insecure, and always attempts to prove herself to other fausts, herself, and in general society as a whole. heathcliff also, is very vulnerable protected by a disguise of violence. heathcliff has given up on proving people wrong, because he's lead to believe what they say about him is a truth that never will be erased. he's haunted figuratively and literally.

their themes of being mocked and abused by people that they are supposed to trust and be calm around is always abundant; faust with her other selves, heathcliff with his 'family'.

they're both also tied to their roles, once again, what others perceive them as. faust can definitely make mistakes. she's made them. she does not know all. she is not an unrivaled genius, but she hates to say it and admit it. because thats what other fausts say, even if society doesnt. and she'd rather die than prove them all right or wrong.

heathcliff can definitely, be a genius. he is smart. he can be smart. he can say and do what is correct, he can make right things definitely more than once. but he stops himself on his tracks because of nerves and; how could he not, when everyone around him has already tagged him as that?

they're both walking a thin line on the thread of right and wrong, everyone's espectations-- their own, too. the thin line they walked, will never be straight. ever fluid, ever changing, but it will never disappear. such are the consequences of what was performed upon their poor, poor souls.
