"I can't help it!" Ruby protested with another yawn. "We've been out here for days and all we've seen are Grimm."

The prospect of being out on a mission like a real Huntress had excited her at first, but it quickly turned into a geological and cultural survey that she hadn't really signed up for. Nor did she fully understand all of what Professor Oobleck was talking about. Mountain Glenn was a tragedy from before any of RWBY's time, so it felt disconnected to the White Fang or Roman Torchwick.

He understood that feeling. Sleeping outdoors without some fencing and a group of guards always felt stupid to Qrow. But this was how Huntsmen did things in Vale. They slept in shifts, taking turns between watch duty. But was it too much for Summer that the stress was shoving nightmares into her sleeping hours?

summer never meant to become a ghost. she appeared the part better than intended ; scarred beyond comprehension, tattered white cloak, her once-silver eyes now clouded and white. summer was still attached to the cloak, it was her sole reminder of a home somewhere.

but she was dead. legally, most likely, summer was pronounced dead years ago. interactions with anyone outside of salem’s people felt like stepping out of mud and into lively chaos she had no business meddling into any longer. her family, teammates, they mourned for her. summer knew they must have. believing she had died was easier than picturing a prisoner.

"SOMETIMES." yang shrugged, lying back on the floor, violet eyes trained on the ceiling above them as she pondered the question. "i think i felt that way about raven, you know? she was my shadow for a long time, and i wasted so much time thinking that maybe someday i would find answers and everything would just fall back into place."

a fairy tale that had been, hadn't it? sometimes, it was better to leave the shadows where they were. shining light on them only made things worse, it seemed.

"I do have everything under control."

It's not really a snap, but that's probably because he's so clearly exhausted that he probably doesn't have the energy to snap, it's likely been allocated to somewhere "more important." How many ill-advised (read: "explicitly discouraged, though not outright forbidden, by more than one medical professional") cups of coffee has he already had today? It's always hard to tell with him: he's never jittery, not overactive, even when he's had several cups in quick succession, coffee doesn't have that effect on him. Outwardly, anyhow, it sends his nervous system into freefall if he's not careful. Something about nerve damage.

"Don't you have somewhere else to be? I can't imagine it's all that engaging to hang over my shoulder. And I'm afraid I'm lacking your choice of refreshment to offer."

"You didn't have to." She didn't know Qrow well, to know what kind of person he was (except for the time he and her sister went at it in the courtyard at Beacon). But she could tell by the way he'd followed Ruby all the way from Patch to keep an eye on her, that he cared for her. If he wasn't a good person, he wouldn't have gone that extra length. He would have left Ruby to deal with things on her own.

And yet... He didn't.
