And when you cannot wait to steal candies and planning about your costumes, have you ever thought why you play pranks? The day when Pumpkin spice Latte is on on trend and where craving the spookiest pumpkin becomes the most compitetive form of art, have came across whats the reason behind all this? Who made the rules and how all this became a culture!?
Lets dig into History First!
The roots go deeper, as we can start now by saying ...
Once upon a time, when Samhain existed this festival was celebrated to welcome harvest at the end of summer. 8th century when Saints decided to honer the day to the uneathly creatures. November 1, when Celtic peple celebrated this day by lighting a bon fire and waer costumes to ward off ghosts - called as "All Saint Day".
Celtic people believed that during this festival spirits walked on earth, hence the evening befor the All Saint Day was known as All Hallows Eve and later Halloween.
The culture of Craving a pumpkin comes from Ireland, yes! Ireland! The legend's tale goes by, a man called Stingy Jack who repeatedly trapped the devil and only allowed let him go on condition that he would never enter HELL, but after his death turns out his soul never really belong to heaven either, his soul wandered around the earth like a ghost, later a burning lump of coal turned his existence into burning body that light his way out.
Thus, the culture of craving scary faces on pumpkin to frighten his soul away arrived.
The colour Black identifies death, whereas Orange identifies as Autum and harvest .
The festival of Samhain marked the transition to the New Year, the harvest, the winter, a begginning of a new thing.
Celetic people use to leave their food out for the spirits, the traveller of night who are unearthly beings, dressing like them and feeding them became a part of culture to serve these supernatural - ghostly beings.

How this culture flourished?
43 AD, Roman invasion occured and serving the Pomona- Goddess of Agriculture and Abudance became a tradition, when Christian Missonaries got introduced - November 2 became "All Soul's Day".
1400 - when Hysteria spread across Europe and when Catholoic conervesion took over, Wisdom and Medicine were considered a sign of Devil.
Dark Felines, dark magic, black cats, bats - all of it got asscoiated with Supernatural Entities.
Even though Salem Witch trails occured long back ago, parapsychologist like Christopher Chacon still states a hypothesis like believes the action of reincarnation and even exorcism.
Chacon believes that the entire existence of unearthly beings lies within the concept of psychology and physics - where illusion of soul and mind goes hand in hand, wherethe emotions of being and science always surprice - not every psychology and sociology major do not agree - but the hypothesis do seem believeable to some.
But again does the existence behind these entities and all the superstion goes so much hand in hand, it becomes quite difficult to understand what is factual and what is superstition!
Treat the Market?
The immigration plays a huge role when it comes to trends, celebrations and customs of Halloween.
Where the distribution of candies came along with Scottish, they often practiced this as "Souling", during middle ages children and poor adults would collect food and money from local, as they send prayers to the dead on All Soul's Day.
During 20th century - the candy companies bommed! Yes the marketing and advertisement in this era served the candy industry!
Thats how the standard for serving candies during Halloween as treat became a custom between 1950's - 1970's.
While Pranking was just a good nurtured mischief acitivity brought by the Irish and Scottish immigrants when they came to America.
Hence that's how you have all the answers! The businesses, immigration and most importantly people shape the enitre culture.
Now, most importantly - Cinema! Especially, Hollywood!
Movies like "Close encounters of third line", "Poltergeist" and "Exorcist" ; Hollywood cinema does bring the freedom of open discussion and even the power of imagination whenit comes to how supernatural beings are and how their anatomy shapes the spooky customs and culture.
As Spielberg have always thanked Dr. Jallen Hynek; the culture and discussion of ghosts and customes does bring people closer which do shape the ideology of the society.
