Fantaghiro part 1 is:
there's an endless war, the king has two daughters and his wife is about to give birth, he asks fortune tellers if it's a boy (he needs a boy), they say it is. but then the White Witch appears and tells him they're lying
it is a girl, and the queen dies. the king is pissed off, he wants to kill her because she 'killed the queen'. the White Witch stops him
the daughter grows up into a tomboy and a little shit, she bullies her older sisters who are actually kind to her and want to protect her
she's put into a well by the king for disobeying him and the king agrees to let her out if she makes a list of promises, that list is so long that as it's read, Fantaghiro and her sisters become adults
they are set to marry three princes to forge alliances: a stupid one, an ugly one, and a pervert. Fantaghiro runs away
she gets to a magic forest where she meets various creatures including this talking rock who I hated as a child (Nick the stick's brother??)
she also meets a gay White Knight who teaches her to fight, he then fucks off and she's sad bc she kinda found him hot
the enemy king dies and his son, the new king, is hot and kind. she almost shoots him with an arrow and he's obsessed
the new enemy king proposes that he fights a champion from Fantaghiro's kingdom and that would end the war. the White Witch says that the champion should be the king's descendant, but the king has only daughters, Fantaghiro jumps at the chance to dress herself and her sisters as men and to bully them for not being manly enough
I get why I ate it up at 8 yo. I'm surprised by the fact that she only dresses as a man at the end of the first feature length film, I remember her spending most of the show like that. I dislike Fantaghiro for mistreating her sisters, but I hope she character develops out of that. all in all, a gay child's dream show.
I love that love is a central theme in Fantaghiro. Not only romantic love but also love for nature and all living beings. Love for siblings, for parents, for children.
And even though Fantaghiro hated Tarabas for what he did she changed her mind after getting to know him.
While Tarabas was obviously bored by all the hate he had to embody and live and found more pleasure in love and being good - a whole different life and perspective.
And there are also Romualdo and Fantaghiro becoming enemies to lovers while Fantaghiro stays true to herself and doesn't lose her edge nor her masculine personality. She isn't pressed into a role or tradition. She tried once with giving up her sword and fighting. And I admire her for that she fought literally without a sword for the longest time in order to rescue damsel in distress Romualdo. She's brave and bold. More than that. She's always smiling and full of love and life. Warmth. It's beautiful.
Fantaghirò is so so full of rage, it's so so great. I love her.
she's so ready to throw hands and she lives fully on spite, as if they looked into every girl's heart and took the anger they found there to fuel her and it's so so good
