To say Harry Potter is very badly written is so disingenuous. I keep seeing these takes on Tumblr and I need to say something.
Millions upon millions didn't fall in love with the series as a joke, they didn't read the books and watch the movies to make fun of it all. No one engaged with it as a personal endurance of bad writing.
People loved it that much because it was a classic kids going on adventures and fighting evil. And it is GOOD.
Do not say I'm defending Rowling you know damn well I'm not. Saying bad people can't make good art is bullshit and proven false many times over.
I even see wild claims that "no one liked it" which is just such bullshit.

I see someone got the rose-tinted nostalgia glasses glued to their face. Those books are mediocre at best and no better than toilet paper at their worst. The reason so many people loved them is because they're accessible, not because they're good. Lose the damn glasses and stop giving money to a ghoul.

Oh look, someone who assumed OP is a potterhead or whatever with zero evidence of that. The books weren't shittily written, they were definitely better written than like, Twilight. That doesn't excuse the bigotry in them, but writing on a technical level, yes, OP has a good point and it's pathetic people keep going on about how "the books are shit writing" when anyone can open them up and see that's not true. They're not a miracle of crappy writing being published, they're decently written, not groundbreaking, but decently written. They're not shit like a lot of people say. End of story.

GOD, THANK YOU, FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS IT!
You can disregard me for being biased since I grew up with Harry Potter, it got me into long fantasy book series in general and JKR's writing (by which I mean sentence structure) remains one of the few that I actually enjoy and influenced my writing a lot (also taught me a lot of words). But for real, I can NOT take anyone seriously when they say HP is objectively bad. You can dislike it, it's not everyone's cup of tea, especially if you're past the target age demographic, but all the reasons I've ever seen given for why it's 'mediocre' are so superficial.
"It has too many plot holes" it has maybe one or two plot big holes that are not immediately obvious to someone enjoying it for the story, until they've actually read it several times and thought about it too hard, similar to how Toy Story's entire premise falls apart when you start to question why Buzz also freezes when humans enter the room if he doesn't know he's a toy. And since when has any story not had some plot holes here or there? The point is how well the author can distract you from those plot holes OR make you suspend your disbelief by chalking it up to "that's just how their world works", and JKR did that. It's a testament to how big HP became that people have picked it apart chapter by chapter over the years until point out every detail that she included or swept over.
"There's racism in it, the goblins are anti-semitic! The one major Asian character is named Cho Chang and the black character is named Kingsley Shacklebolt!" First of all, claiming the goblins are supposed to be Jews somehow is a ridiculous reach and honestly just makes you sound stupid - either you yourself have some ideas about Jews that you think the humanoid creatures with long noses who work with money can't possibly represent anything else (because of course they have to represent SOMETHING, they couldn't just be MAGICAL CREATURES IN A WORLD OF MAGIC), or you just got that idea from someone else and immediately believed it because you needed more tangible evidence to hate JKR and warn people away from HP. As for the names, IT'S A CHILDREN'S BOOK. No kid who reads this is going to see any deeper meaning in those names, they're just funny sounding and outlandish so that they're easy to remember. The How to Train Your Dragon books have a character named Big-Boobied Bertha for crying out loud; you think it wouldn't be easy for people to point to that as evidence that Cressida Cowell is misogynist if people ended up wanting to cancel her too?
Listen, I have found out so many of the creators of things I love are terrible people, but I'm not going to base my taste or enjoyment of fictional media or my fucking morals on their awfulness. I judge art on its own merit. I am prepared for the chance that any creator will reveal themselves to be a terrible, evil piece of shit, no matter how amazing I think their work is, because you literally can't know what a person is like through their creative work alone. So I'm not going to apologize for liking something that I liked for my own reasons that have nothing to do with the author's beliefs, and I refuse to be bullied into having an epiphany that I fell for "bad writing", which is a completely subjective metric. I know what I think is bad writing, and I know what I think is good and what I enjoy. I'm sure most other people do too.
