Remember those red houses I told you about, the color comes from this copper mine in Falun, Sweden 🇸🇪 The area was probably mined by Vikings, but the first document about the mine is from 1288. During the Swedish Golden Age in the 1600s more than two thirds of Europe's Copper was mined here and over 1000 men worked to produce more than 3000 tons of raw copper per year. During this time a visitor to the mine produced a vivid description of the life of the miners. He said that the miners climbed rickety ladders with sweat pouring from their bodies like "water from a bath". He continued: "The Falun Mine is one of the great wonders of Sweden but as horrible as hell itself". The description of the environment the miners worked in is as follows: "Soot and darkness surrounded them on all sides. Stones, gravel, corrosive vitriol, drips, smoke, fumes, heat, dust, were everywhere". Temperatures inside the mine reached more than 40°C! .
