Hi! So, I have OCD and I'm in a really happy, healthy relationship. My girlfriend is the love of my life and the girl of my dreams. My OCD, however, makes me feel really scared that I'm going to get a crush on someone else. It goes in phases; first I was terrified I had a crush on an old friend, then several classmates, & now I'm really scared I might have a crush on a new friend. It just feels SO real and it causes me a lot of distress. Do you have any advice on how to tell if a crush is real?
Hey friend!
I’m so glad to hear that you’re in a loving relationship <3 I can tell that your girlfriend means a lot to you, and I’m so sorry that your OCD took advantage of that.Â
You might have heard of the term Relationship OCD (ROCD) before, but in case you haven’t, here is a website that talks a little more about the ways ROCD can manifest and affect you and your relationship.Â
False attraction can be so frustrating, because it really can feel so real. In the moment it can be entirely impossible to tell whether or not it’s real. The more you try to understand it and dissect it, the more confusing and anxiety-inducing it becomes. I’ve definitely been there! That is because trying to figure out whether the crush is real is a compulsion. You may ruminate about this “crush” (think deeply about it, go through past interactions and memories with this person, try to prove it wrong, etc.) and you may also check how you feel and react when your with this person or thinking about this person. Both ruminating and checking are compulsions. They can sometimes provide momentary relief, but they ultimately make things worse and continue the obsessive cycle of OCD.Â
For this reason, it’s actually best to not figure out whether the crush is real or not. This means that you have to resist the compulsions that tell you need to find out if it’s real. This is easier said than done though. A part of healing from OCD is learning to accept uncertainty. When you get an intrusive thought like “I have a crush on that person” instead of becoming anxious and worried over whether it’s true, you can say “so what if it’s true?” Now again, it takes a long time to be able to accept uncertainty, and realize that your thoughts do not define you or your life. So please don’t feel frustrated if you’re having trouble accepting these concepts. A lot of people find it more helpful to work through this with a professional, who can offer an outsiders opinion and expertise. In the meantime, when you become worried that you have another crush, and you want to avoid compulsions, there are a few coping mechanisms you can do!This is an acknowledging technique: When you get a thought like “you like this person even though you have a girlfriend,” take a deep breath (and close your eyes if it helps). Say to yourself “okay, I’ve had this thought and it bothered me. This is a symptom of my OCD, but I’m going to move on now” take another deep breath and try to continue what you were doing. It’s okay if the anxiety or thoughts don’t go away right away. Sitting through the anxiety is actually how you learn to conquer these intrusive thoughts.I hope that this all makes sense. If you have any other questions, or if you ever want to chat/rant I’m here! Feel free to send me a message or another ask, and i’d be happy to talk with you. You can get through this, angel, and you can feel confident and happy in all aspects of your life again. Wishing you the best <3
