I forgot to mention it the other day!
I pulled out my first real "teacher stare" the other day!
So I fieldwork in the morning for two periods of ninth graders - honors English - which is perfect because that's honestly the grade I'd like to teach. (I'm having to add a third period eleventh grade CP English for a college class assignment, but that's irrelevant right now.) So, it was the second period, and they're a little more chatty and squirrely than the first period. I'm just standing at the front of the room, and my CT (Cooperating Teacher) had stepped aside to help someone at the computers. I glanced around the room, keeping an eye on things, noticing how they work together, etc, and out of the corner of my eye see a girl raise her hand. I look over...
...and see she has a paper ball wadded up in her hand, all ready to throw it.
I catch her eye and just cocked a brow. She dropped her hand instantly, laughed a little nervously, and said some forced-casual "oh shit you just caught me didn't you?" comment. I smirked and said, "Yeah, don't even think it."
I kept an eye on her for a little bit, and saw her go to raise her arm to try to throw it again and stared at her.
She cried out - more amused than annoyed I think - "Stop watching me!"
A few minutes after that, she actually got up to drop the paper ball in the trash instead of throw it.
Hell, I hear from my friends and family all the time that I have an intimidating look, or this Stare that freaks them out sometimes, but I've never really believed it was that good. ;)
Gonna have to use that look more often!
So first two days of fieldwork went well. CT calls me "hun" when I show up and leave, she let me take a look at the CELDT test, invited me to stay that extra period, offered to get me in touch with the EL teacher so I could see that, is already talking with me about student teaching in the spring and how we might work the Teaching Event, and is being super helpful.
However, in that third period class I'll be staying for is one of my little sister's friends. It's one of the friends I'm on slightly more friendly terms with than Ding and Dong (formerly called Thing One and Thing Two; I like making them a doorbell better) and apparently she's the trouble maker in the squirrely Junior class.
She found out I'd be there and acted all excited that I'd be observing in her class. She left and I flat out told my mom that she better not be thinking I'm going to be all friendly with her then, or she'll be in for a big surprise when I nail her with a Look for talking out of turn...
