You absolutely DO NOT have to write out Chekov’s accent! Or Scotty’s! Or anyone’s! I know the characters and how they speak. I will read your regular English words in their voices. Promise!

I don’t think some of your realize how difficult it is to Decipher the made up language that gets created for those characters. How much it pulls me out of the story. How much time it takes my brain to piece together what’s trying to be said. There’s no consistency between authors either so each time I read something new I have to decode another translation.

Speech patterns are one thing, along with word preferences and usage. Spock says “Fascinating” and McCoy might say “Y’all” and Scotty is more likely to use a phrase like “oh aye captain” but those are spelled in standard way. A way I already recognize.
