In which my Sidestep has a very strange idea of courtship. Argentstep, ~1200 words, Argent x f!Sidestep. Retribution spoilers.
âSo,â Argent says. âHere you are.â
Sheâs standing beneath a streetlight, the orange glow gilding the edges of her skin, and the effect is so ethereal that it takes you a moment to speak. âHere I am. Are you going to tell me that we need to stop meeting like this?â
âWouldnât dream of it.â
A single leap brings you down from your perch on the wall. Youâre showing off, but you know she wonât complain. âThat tip-off you got was a lie, by the way. Iâm not hunting any of your vigilante friends tonight. I just wanted to get you here.â
She rolls those eerie (beautiful) eyes. âYou made sure I got a false tip-off and then hung around all evening, just so you could see me?â
âSo I could fight you.â Feet shift into a ready stance; fists come up. âAre we going or not?â
Her grin is the only answer you need.
And so you fight her. You fight Lady Argent across the city, fists and claws clashing in the eveningâs smoky haze. You grapple on the rims of earthquake scars and dance across the rooftops. You lock arms with her and push against her strength, feeling her pulse hammering through the silver skin.Â
There was no need for this. This bizarre chase serves no purpose in your plans. But you wanted to fight her, because when her claws are scraping against your armour and your mind is fixated on nothing but her mind, on her, just her⌠everything makes sense, somehow. Feels clearer. More real.
You made sure to divert the media before you came. Ever since Argent kissed you and scarred your lip, your fights have taken on a new, private meaning. Cameras would be an intrusion; news reports would taint everything. So now sheâs chasing you through an abandoned tower block, and the worldâs silent except for your feet and your punches, dark except for the occasional flash of moonlight against her skin.
She hurls you through a door and it shatters against your back. Painful, yes, but not enough to stop you from springing back up almost as soon as you hit the floor. Fists raised again, feet light on the ground. Argent lingers in the shattered doorway, the usual smirk playing about her lips.
Shit. How does anyone have lips that impeccable?
âIf you wanted me alone,â she says, claws drumming on the remains of the doorframe, âyou could have got out of that armour and taken me to a bakery.â
âWow. Rude. I go to all this trouble, and you pretend youâd have preferred some normal date to this? Weâve got it all here. Starlight. Privacy. Adrenaline.â And the thrill of this strange dance with your enemy, your ally, the woman who saw your face and thought it was worth kissing.
Her eyes sweep the roomâs peeling walls and broken roof. âYou have a strange idea of romance.â
âSays the woman who kissed a villainâs helmet.â
The claw-drumming stops; that memory clearly still rankles. Or, at least, its aftermath does. âI didnât hear you complaining at the time. But if youâre going to complain now... take it off.â
An order. Your insides give a sickening twist, and you donât move, because for a moment youâre back in the Farm and you canât â
Then Argentâs hair stirs in the breeze drifting through the broken windows, and the memories drop away. Youâre not back there, youâre here. And sheâs so beautiful that you donât even think about another tower, another pane of broken glass, because youâre not there either.
Youâre here. With her.
âI said, take the helmet off,â Argent says. âUnless youâd rather carry on our dance. I donât have a preference.â
You take in a deep gulp of air. Playing to othersâ rules is something you swore off a long time ago. But she played your game, didnât she, when she showed up for this fight? You owe her for that. You owe her for giving you a shining hour where every breath in your lungs and every beat of your heart felt like it was real, like it mattered.
So you snap open your helmet fastenings and pull your head free.
Maybe you expected her to lunge for you, crush her lips over yours again, snag teeth against your skin. But she doesnât. She moves towards you slowly, almost warily, talon-like fingers reaching up to rest against your cheek. One stroke to the side and she could cut your throat open, but her touch is enough to make you lower your fists, lower your guard, lower everything.
This is so incredibly stupid. This is leaving yourself vulnerable, itâs putting yourself into someone elseâs hands, and you promised yourself, you swore never again. You canât afford this.
But you want it. Want her. Want to trust her.
Delicate claws trace the rise and fall of your cheekbone, sliding strands of hair behind your ear with a light flick. Your breath stutters and you slam your eyes closed. Maybe if you donât look at her, she wonât see how sheâs affecting you.
You feel the claws melt back into fingers. Soft and smooth against your skin. And then her lips, closing around your own.
She steps in close, metallic skin snug against your armour, and you reach up to slide your nanovore-free hand into her hair. Her mind leaps in response, fierce and warm, like machinery jumpstarted. All her thoughts are melting together, filling up with â
With you. Sheâs thinking of you, your lips, your hands â and she likes it. She wanted this, hoped for this when she came out here, she was eager to have her lips full of yours and her mind full of you and only you.
You, who swarmed into her mind and enslaved it.
Your helmet falls from your free hand and rolls away over the floor as you tug her in tighter. This is why youâre doing this, showing your throat to her claws. She has no reason to trust you. You don't deserve her trust. So youâll take the first step, youâll trust her, bare yourself, bring everything in you that can be hurt right up to the surface. Youâll kiss her with everything you have. Offer her everything you are.
(Youâre not much. You know that. But she must know that too, and yet here she is.)
It hurts so much less than you feared, letting go of the control youâve always clung to so tightly. Thereâs a thrill in surrendering. In trusting. In choosing to leap from an edge for once, not being forced over. And right here, right now, with Ximenaâs lips warm and so wonderfully, surprisingly gentle over your own, you feel the same way you did when you first marched out on the world in your armour.Â
Strong and fierce and free. Filled with the euphoria of falling.

Florence really went all out with the villain aesthetic. For such a depressed mess she has quite a flair for dramatics. But also, Lady Argent how did you kiss that?
hereâs a one shot i wrote about my useless lesbian sidestep named dawn, in which she unwillingly dreams about a happy memory.
-----
dreaming is dawnâs least favorite. because her dreams arenât always nightmares consisting of bad memories. sometimes theyâre good memories, and those hurt worse than the latter.
tonight, she climbs into bed, her body throbbing with incessant pain and her mind buzzing from painkillers that donât work. she checks her shitty little phone one last time with stupid curiosity to see if anyone has texted - or rather, someone in particular. but there are no new messages. she hates the way that makes her feel hollow. stupid. sucking in breath between her teeth, she lets the phone drop to the ground, and turns off the lamp on her bedside table.
sleep comes quickly. itâs dreamless at first. false hope, for sure.Â
there is no such thing as dreamless sleep, nowadays, after everything and nothing. itâs not fair. but many things arenât fair.
sheâs sitting beside julia. of course the dream starts with that.
juliaâs hair is long and braided, and thereâs wispy curls around her face as she turns her face up to the sky. dawn watches her eyes close in momentary bliss, a smug smile on her face as she breathes in the salty air. salty air?
dawn looks out in front of them, and she sees the ocean, and the sun glittering on the water.
oh. theyâre sitting by the sea. that makes sense.
âi used to hate the ocean when i was little,â julia says, glancing sideways at dawn with amusement in her tone. dawn looks back at her. sheâs young, and golden in the light, and beautiful as always. itâs ridiculous. âi donât know if iâve ever told you that.â
âyou havenât,â dawn responds, and her own voice sounds far away. itâs a dream, so that happens sometimes, though now dawn is unaware that sheâs dreaming at all.
âwell, i used to be scared of sharks. and dad used to tell me stories about people getting swept out to sea by the currents and waves. i thought that was the most terrifying thing iâd ever heard.â when she talks about her father, she uses a neutral tone. dawn could never speak neutrally about someone that she resented, even when reminiscing about simple memories like this. but thatâs simply apart of juliaâs survival system - donât give power to things that have hurt you, and the hurt wonât own you.
âyou never struck me as someone who would have been scared by that,â dawn remarks, spitting out a piece of hair that gets in her mouth when the wind blows. having long hair is such a hassle. itâs too bad sheâs too insecure to cut it all off, even if she spends most of her time in public in a suit and mask.
julia laughs, at both dawnâs comment and hair struggle. dawn notices sheâs fiddling with a seashell between her always moving fingers. âwell, i was. just imagining getting swept out gave me nightmares. i refused to even stick my feet in the water.â she shrugs as she always does. âi guess it was the lack of control that scared me. but i donât mind it much, now.â she sets aside the seashell and picks up another one, looking it over with curious eyes.
fear of a lack of control. dawn can certainly empathize with that. but she also wonders what changed juliaâs mindset about it.
âwhat changed?â dawn asks, and inwardly cringes. wow. she really couldnât have phrased that inquiry any more pointedly. for someone who values privacy, it seems she has no shame impeding on othersâ.
julia looks at her, and to dawnâs relief, sheâs not surprised or offended. rather, she looks truly thoughtful. her dark brown eyes are honey colored in the sun. damn. the sunlight on the sea doesnât hold a candle to her.
âi almost died,â she answers. âand i became a vigilante. after a while, control was way more of an act than a reality. i knew i had no choice to accept that, so i did.â she pauses, looking like she has something else to say, but decides better of it. instead, she sighs, and continues. âand now⌠somehow, the lack of control feels nice. sometimes i want to take advantage of it and do whatever the hell i want, but i donât really have the choice to do that when iâm relied on so much.â her smile is semi wistful now, and dawnâs heart pangs for a reason that she canât decipher.
âmaybe someday youâll have that choice,â dawn suggests, a bit quieter as she turns her gaze away. in her gut, sheâs definitely jealous that thereâs even a âmaybeâ in juliaâs forecast. julia could throw everything to the wind and stop what she was doing, nevermind the consequences that would come with that.
dawn? she had never had a choice in anything, and she never would. that had been for sure from the moment she was created.
but... what if she did have a choice? what if they could both leave all of this behind at the drop of a hat someday? itâs immensely unrealistic to think about, and sheâs well aware of that.
somehow, in the warmth of this moment and the fuzziness she feels when julia smiles, âwhat ifâs donât sound all that bad.
âmaybe,â julia responds thoughtfully, looking out at the waves with her eyebrows knit. sheâs quiet for a moment, and then nudges dawn with her elbow, a playful grin blossoming on her face. âbut i donât think i could do that without at least taking you with me. you canât get away from me that easily.â her words are playful, but there's a hint of sincerity underneath - one that only she can pull off.
dawn chuckles, managing to hide the ache in her chest as she nudges her back. âiâll hold you to that.â
theyâre both quiet after that, looking out to the water and listening to the waves crash. itâs late afternoon, almost evening - they should be heading back soon. but thereâs a sense of calm in dawnâs chest that she hasnât felt in a long time. maybe sheâs never felt this calm before. itâs nice. julia is nice. the sun on the water is nice, even if itâs bright.
so bright that thereâs still spots behind dawnâs eyes when she wakes up.
thereâs no jolt, no gasp, no throwing of covers. just darkness and the mixture of feelings in her chest as she becomes aware of her own consciousness.
maybe.Â
what if.
those phrases still echo in the back of her mind, and fuck, she hates them. she runs her fingers across the buzzed texture of her scalp. things have changed. thereâs no room for the stupid fantasies she had before her world turned upside down.
unlike when she has nightmares, she doesnât get up to get a cigarette. instead, she lays in bed, and she thinks, and the tears come before she can stop them. so she curls into herself, and she lets herself cry, mourning the loss of everything exchanged in that memory. the laughter. the warmth of the sun. the notion that there was a future for the both of them, as bleak as it was.
it turns out that she has a choice now. she wonât change what sheâs going to do with that choice.
but right now, she allows herself to wish otherwise, with juliaâs smile and the sea burnt so vividly into her mind.

well, I fell in love with Fallen Hero: Rebirth, and while I know absolutely nothing about art or drawing I wanted to put my Sidestep somewhere other than my brain, so here she is
her name is Ryan Becker, coffee is probably the only reason sheâs still standing, and she keeps making bad decisions because sheâs a Disaster Lesbian surrounded by hot, confident women
(more details under the cut if youâre interested)
Specialization: Tech-savvy tactician
Puppet: Eden, a tall mixed race woman with green eyes and long curly black hair
Villain Identity: REDACTED
Suit: Mysterious, âa shadow with a mirror for a face, revealing nothingâ with the telepathic boosters and speed/jump-jets upgrades, and the cape (still attached)
Love Interest(s): Ryan and Ortega had a thing in the past and Ryan kissed her in the hospital, and in Retribution theyâre at âopen attraction,â with genuine feelings involved. Eden had been flirting with Ortega, but Ryan got jealous and steered that relationship into pure friendship. meanwhile, Eden and Dr. Mortum went to the gala together and are now lovers, with genuine feelings involved. Puppetmaster and Lady Argent are certainly...something
the necklace Ryan has can also be worn as a bracelet. itâs a cord of leather with a penny strung on it. after she escaped The Farm she found the penny, recalled the rhyme âfind a penny, pick it up, all day long youâll have good luck,â and figured it couldnât hurt. the next couple of days things actually got better, and it had gained sentimental value, so she figured out a way to keep it with her
your writing are amazing especially the angst sweet sweet angst. đâ¤ď¸can you write something about steel realising he have feeling for female sidestep ? Which be the way a very kind and warm sidestep .
SooooâŚ.. this turned a bit more of a Bi panic with m!Ortega thrown inâŚ. yep
Her warm laughter fills the room, eyes crinkling happily as Ortega finishes his ridiculous joke. It warms you in an unexpected way, making you bite back your own smile that threatens to join hers.
Instead you find yourself crossing your arms and a frown forcibly put into place. You donât know why itâs like this. Why everytime sheâs near you feel warm, like youâve found someplace to comfortably exist. And everytime your away from her youâve found your thoughts straying to her. Itâs an unexpected development and your not sure how to handle it.
She turns toward you bright smile lighting up her face, your heartbeat pounds in your chest. âDonât look so grumpy Chen,â she laughs her finger reaches out poking between your eyebrows, âI hear if you scowling like that itâll stay that way.â Her smile turns soft but it feels like all you can hear is the blood rushing to your face. âBesides Ortegaâs joke wasnât that badâŚâ she cringes jokingly, still trying to get you to smile.
âIâm pretty sure a 14 year old could tell better jokes,â you deadpan and she responds by trying to hold in her laugh turning it into a snort. A blush heats her cheeks and she looks away from the both of you as Ortega complains that his joke was good.
You ignore him, your attention fully focused on her and the way the sunlight from the window highlights her and her blush. Sheâs beautifulâŚwaitâŚWhat!? Where did that thought come from?! You donât evenâŚdo you? Wait no no no. This is⌠what is this? No. Your not⌠oh fucking hell this is not the time for this.
You have to work to unclench your jaw, thoughts still rapidly panicking. Youâre not currently in a position to work through⌠whatever that is.
You know exactly what it is.
And right now youâre going to work on denying it with every fiber of your being until you can either sort it out later or bury it so far down itâll never know the light of day again.
Ortega grips your shoulder bringing you out of your thoughts, only to have his own bright smile cause more chaos in your mind. Fuck this whole situation.
You shrug off his hand and find yourself storming out of the room. Away from him, away from her, as far away as you possibly can get from the both of them.
And you try not to think of her warm laugh, the kindness she shows to everyone and everything, and the way she makes you feel at home. You also try not to think of his troublemaking smile, the bravery and stupidity he shows every day, and the way he makes you feel alive.
You had thought that you were gay, proven by your feelings for Ortega (which you were supposed to be over) but than you had to grow closer to her. All that has led to, is more confusion. How is this even a possibility for you? You had been so sureâŚ
But than she had come out of nowhere and sucker punched her way into your thoughts. You know youâve caught your thoughts wandering: How would it feel to touch her? To run a hand through her hair? But youâd always cut yourself off, shaking away the thoughts before they could go farther.
NowâŚnow you should probably face the truth⌠but in the end itâs always easier to hide it away. The feelings would go away eventually just like what you did with Ortega⌠but the feelings didnât go away, did they?
No now your stuck in an even more complicated and confusing situation. You wonder if running away to another city is an option.
