Name: Eyeball with Bat Wings
Debut: I gotta be honest. I don't know
It is HALLOWEEN! You already knew that, because who doesn't? Someone else knows, too. Someone else knows many things. Someone has been watching. Eyeball with Bat Wings has been watching.
By day, they slumber. What do they dream of? Sheep eyeballs, flying around, scrying with rectangular pupils? Oooh, they better watch out for the coyote eyeballs! The eyebats slumber within the oldest, wickedest, gnarliest tree in the forest, the muck and slime within which keeps their lidless lenses moist. And once the sun sets, they emerge...
Have you ever seen them? Because they've seen you! Behind you, above you, outside your window... there may even be one watching you read this post, depending on the time! They peep on you without making a peep. What do they want? They just want to see! They want to know what you're doing, what you're wearing, what you're eating, what your sense of interior decorating is like... they truly mean no harm. True, they could end up seeing something you'd rather keep secret. But they can't tell anyone, and they wouldn't want to, anyway. They're just creatures! Do you get embarrassed when your resident dust mites see your naked body any time you get undressed? This is the exact same thing, basically.
Of course, people will be people. People will see a wild animal and, rapt by its cuteness, want to take it in and care for it as a pet. And as usual, this is not a good idea! Want to give an indoor flutterbeye the best possible life? I hope you know how to synthesize the tree gunk they need for moisture! I especially hope you're prepared to give up cooking anything with onions! And the biggest danger... TV.
Cheyeropterans exposed to any sort of video will become, tragically, unsalvageable. The sights of the real world will no longer be able to hold their attention at all. It doesn't matter what's on the screen. Some people think they're doing their pet a favor by having it only watch wholesome shows like Bluey, but in practice, anything -from Ed, Edd, 'n' Eddy, to Days of Our Lives- will just fry the poor eyeball with blue light. Some may lament that drive-in theaters have lost their popularity, but look how the eyebat populations have rebounded since! We shouldn't bat an eye at that.
When I was first thinking about writing this post, my goal was to delve into the history of Eyeball with Bat Wings throughout human culture. In doing that research... I found nothing at all! I did learn about the prevalence of winged eyeballs in hot rod and surfing culture, but those seem to always have FEATHERED wings. Even if those had bat wings, I would have a hard time believing such a simple, iconic monster design originated so recently. All I learned without a doubt... is that this surfing eyeball by Rick Griffin is pretty rad! Yowza!
Do YOU know more about the origins of these pteroculuses? I would love to know! And I'd also love to see them make their widespread debut as a subject of Halloween decorations! How has that not happened yet? Maybe the surfers were right! People as a whole just don't look at enough winged eyeballs in daily life!
Simon has a small handful of Stuffed animals, all of them named after old friends
Flying eyeballs.
