What’s the best way to learn to write?
I’m looking for suggestions. The ability to express oneself clearly in writing is so vital to success in school, university and beyond, (as well as being a great pleasure in itself), yet in my experience as a Grade 12 social studies teacher, too many kids are being short-changed by school, which passes them through its grades without ever teaching too many of them the skills needed to craft an articulate sentence. Get the sentence right, and all the rest follows. From the sentence springs the paragraph, and from the paragraph, the essay.
So please, tell me. What worked for you? Alternatively, where do you feel you were let down by the teaching you received? What do you wish you had been taught, but weren’t? Experiences of learning to write in languages other than English very welcome.
