We have just implemented one of our most popular requests: you can now add your very own expense categories to Craftybase. You'll now find over in your Category settings pages a new tab called "Expense Categories": this area allows you to add new expense categories and edit the names of your pre-defined ones.

If you access your receipt data using the web version of Lemon, you may have noticed that there are now expense categories attached to you purchases. If you only use the mobile version, don’t worry, these will soon be coming in a version of the app to be released in the near future. Categories are a description of the merchant that Lemon automatically adds to your purchase. These categories are drawn from a wide range of sources, and in many cases, the category reflects how the merchant has identified itself. If you want to change the category, you can do this easily, by clicking “Edit" to select a new category.

Categories can help you generate more meaningful reports to track spending. They are a great addition to help you organize receipts and manage expenses.

And don’t worry if you’ve gotten attached to using labels. The label functionality is still there and is a great complement to categories. Labels are completely customizable to meet your own needs. Some people use labels in the same way as categories to describe the type of merchant.  But labels can really be used for any other purpose you want.

You can create new labels to meet your own needs, and add these to your receipts. For example, if you want to easily group all of your expenses from a recent trip, you can create a label such as “Trip to San Francisco" and add it to the related expenses.
