I’m not reblogging any of those “Google Drive is deleting my writing” posts, because no one can provide a solid source to prove they’re doing that intentionally based on content guidelines. Could be a glitch. Drive is simply not the most reliable platform, especially with all the half-baked AI updates they’re rolling out. However. I do have a PSA:
Do not rely on big tech companies to keep your data A.) safe or B.) private. Just don’t. EVER!
For creative writing (ESPECIALLY if you’re writing advertiser-unfriendly content, but even if you’re not), I would recommend a multi-tiered storage approach. Here’s how I back up my writing, very scientifically organized by chronology and rigamarole:
Computer hard drive. Keep at least two file formats/copies if you’re really paranoid. (I use the bespoke .scriv format from Scrivener and the generic .otf format using LibreOffice.)
External hard drive. All these writing files are saved on my drive when I backup my computer, along with everything else. I try to back up my computer at least monthly. (Invest in an external drive, it’s good data hygiene and cheaper than cloud storage!)
Thumb drive dedicated to creative writing. Really basic. Yes this is separate from my backup drive, because tech can break.
PRINT COPIES. You know what AI really can’t scrape? You know what big tech REALLY can’t destroy, even in some apocalyptic scenario where all computers vanish? Paper, bay-BEE. Put that shit in a plastic binder somewhere and forget about it.
I realize I sound like a data doomsday prepper, but I thought I would share since some ppl have never used a data storage method APART from Google Drive. I’m sympathetic to you if you’ve lost writing; that really sucks, and it shouldn’t happen, and I want to help you prevent that in the future.
I live by the rule that if you want to keep any piece of writing for the long run, you need to store it in at least three places. Back it up. Print it. Email it to all your friends. Save ur work + stay safe out there bbs!!!
Every time Elon does something outside of rockets and cars someone who knows better points out what a moron he is.
