Contradictions of Feminine & Masculine?
It was when I was selecting my work for inclusion of the exhibition at The Link Gallery, Winchester for âInternational Womenâs Dayâ 7th-28th March 2017 that made me sot back and think about gender identity in my work. I feel that colours in everyday products are selected according to the gender targeted, for example pink for girls or blue for boys. This is mostly noticeable in toys.
To chose my work, I found it useful to review the dictionary definitions of masculine and feminine:
Having qualities or appearance traditionally associated with men.
Of or denoting a gender of nouns and adjectives, conventionally regarded as male.
The male sex or gender.â
Having qualities or an appearance traditionally associated with women, especially delicacy and prettiness.
Of or denoting a gender of nouns and adjectives, conventionally regarded as female.
The female sex or gender.
A feminine word or form.â

What gender symbols do you think you have you added into your paintings, sub-consciously?
I am not an artist that pre plans symbology in my work. It happens spontaneously, sub-consciously and accidentally while paining. Recent examples of symbols interpreted by others from or seen in my abstract paintings include:
This is what I adore of abstract art, that colour alone does not dictate the meaning or gender identity of each artwork. You, the viewer, interpret or identify the symbology or meaning within each piece and that is the fun of my new work.

Are your artworks truly representing gender diversion?
I donât think so. You could interpret my work so, but a saying my Grandpa told me stays true:
âBeauty is in the eye of the beholderâ
How do you explain or write about each of your artworks?
I must say that it is hard to explain my work as they are true expressions that are always unplanned and from my subconscious. The only two aspects I plan are the type of canvas or paper and a rough selection of colours. I know that the colour schemes, such as fuchsia pink, can intimate gender identity; however, I believe that colours do not have a set or defined gender meaning. Saying this, certain colours suit specific galleries and exhibitions and, therefore, gender identity or meanings play an important role in the selection of my work.

Examples of write-up about your artworks:
It is when I am required to write about my work that I interpret my paintings and then pull out meanings I see, but this is subjective, as is all art.
Below are two write-ups for an exhibition at The Link Gallery, Winchester for âInternational Womenâs Dayâ 7th-28th March 2017:
âShedding Punkâd Viperâ

The painting shown above is a play on the combination of punk art and abstraction. This painting injects a soft, feminine touch into a hard, undefined and often aggressive area such as punk art. Each sweep of fluorescent and bright colours further develops punk and abstraction into a womenâs realm.
âSpotty Punkâd PantherâÂ

This painting features a soft, yet abstract, bouquet of pink, aqua blue and purples coupled with sand, gloss and metallic effects. This painting injects a truly feminine side into a hard, undefined and often aggressive area such as punk art.

A little bit more about my work in 2017:Â Biography
It is from a life-time of creativity which culminated in Lauraâs achievement of an Art and Media Bachelor of Arts with Honors in 2008. This multi disciplined degree expanded both her practical skill set and academic thought processes. Each painting in this series, started in 2002, has been driven forward by further exploring abstract expressionism, with a feminine touch.
These artworks at the Link Gallery are continually influenced by her thought processes, emotions and mood at the time of creation. This free expression enables Laura to explore such techniques from a female perspective.
The two paintings selected in this blog, âShedding Punkâd Viperâ and âSpotty Punkâd Panther demonstrate a true counterpoint to the painting titled âSpotty Punkâd Pantherâ.
