I truly don’t think he was possessive. She was his only true friend, it makes perfect sense for an abused kid like Snape to be afraid of losing her. He saw her slipping away, he knew James was jealous of their friendship and set his sights on Lily. He knew what kind of power and privilege James had (which Snape severely lacked). For how horrible and entitled Snape haters think he is, he was extremely tame in his conversation with Lily.

Also, that’s a topic I think more people, including myself, should talk about. There’s zero mention of Lily having close relationships with any female characters. Okay, in SWM we know that she was with a large group of girls, and we later find out that they’ve been asking her for years why she chooses to stay friends with Snape. But there were no named characters. Many people like to say she and Mary must’ve been close, but if Mary was her friend, she definitely would’ve given Snape much more shit and would’ve sounded more concerned with Mary’s wellbeing. Instead, she referred to her by her full name and only brought her up as a point to prove why Snape shouldn’t associate with Mulciber, because apparently he did something really bad to her a few days before.

We know that she and Snape were friends for several years, then once she started dating James she befriended the Marauders; a tight-knit group of toxic men. JKR wanted to portray her as this strong fiery girl, which we see in SWM when she shouts at James and insults him. However, in her letter to Sirius, she oddly seems to have no personality, just talking about how upset James is that he doesn’t get to leave the house to go on silly adventures. You would never guess based on that letter that her character was supposed to be strong-minded and fierce.

Additionally, the only people to speak of Lily after her death are Sirius, Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Slughorn. [I’m not including Remus because there is literally zero instance of him talking about Lily. The most we get is him saying “your parents” and “she started going out with James in their seventh year.” I don’t think he ever actually says her name in canon lmfao. She also didn’t even mention him in her letter to Sirius. I’ve made a post talking about this before 😭] Slughorn was the only person to talk about her not as a unit to James, he was the only person to actually give Harry information on what his mother was like, rather than raving about James… Mind you, Slughorn was introduced in Book 6, so prior to that, Harry only ever got information about his dad and how awesome and brave he was. There were also no pictures of Lily with her friends at her and James’s wedding, and the only people they considered to be their Secretkeeper were Sirius, Peter, and Dumbledore.
