Assignment 7 My speed improved a bit on this assignment. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so making sure everything looks just right makes the painting take longer for me. I'm not sure how perfect we need to make these, but with simple still life, it's easy to see any flaws versus more complicated paintings. For the photo, I tried taking it with a different angle to reduce glare as much as possible, but then I had to straighten it digitally. This seems to have the side effect of making the table shadow seem crooked. “To draw anything Kim Jung Gi said perspective Understand or quit.” Assignment 5 - I'm getting better at doing straight clean edges, but gradients are still really tough for me. I took most of my time doing the gradients for these. I've been trying to be conscious of checking over my work after each step, but it seems I can notice minor issues more from the photo. The upper left background gradient does have a little banding. Also, I'm not too satisfied with the gradient on the ball. It doesn't have as smooth a texture (compared to the background gradient) and it's obvious that there are three distinct portions. I also did the majority of the painting with a #12 brush, but during the cleanup phase I used a #6. Total time including setup, mixing paint, and rechecking some portions of the video was about eight hours. Probably six hours of actual painting. Is there an average time range we are supposed to be targeting for these? Old paint on the palette is a no no. “The lessons I learned It’s hard to figure them out For you and for me.” Assignment 3 - I think I did ok on this one. But I just now noticed when uploading this image to my PC that the borderline (moderate light and moderate shadow) on the right side of the table is a little smudged. Also, the vast majority of my time spent on this was fixing the edges. I'm ok with making them appear sharp, but my main issue is making them appear straight. Mine appear a bit wobbly. I also did this with the #12 brush as suggested. It was tough getting the corners and many times my brush went into the other shade area. But I think the practice with the big brush is helping me a lot. “Meeting new artists On the same path is a joy But when can I paint?” I had a hard time doing gradients until I figured it out in the rightmost column. I redid column 1 and 2 probably a half dozen times. After not getting the desired results (mostly due to it not being smooth and getting contamination), I asked a few people and they gave me tips about cleaning the brush and mixing admixtures thoroughly. The tip that helped me most was that my lights were too runny using 5 drops of linseed oil. Another student said the same thing about the lights. The advice was instead of using 5 drops of linseed, do 1 drop at a time and then mix until you get the desired consistency. Then I watched Kevin Murphy’s videos again—repeating a few sections a couple times. This helped a bunch as well. So I applied these tips when I did column 3 and I was able to do it exponentially quicker and it looks much better than column 2.
