EOS Lip Care

It’s definitely been a hot minute since I talked about EOS lip balms over on ze blog. But we’re throwing it back to my high school self with these adorable lip spheres today. In grade 10, my friend, Erin (shoutout to my girl), and I were OBSESSED with EOS lip balms. They had just started getting popular within the Youtube community and every beauty guru I watched was featuring them in their videos. But, at the time, these were impossible to find in Canada. The only place we were able to find them was a random clothing store called RW&Co. But, we were able to track them down and we were probably the happiest sixteen year olds. Because that’s all you need to make sixteen year olds happy: lip balm. 

However, if you’re a long time follower of the blog, you might be thinking, “Taylor... haven’t you already done a review about the EOS lip balms THREE years ago?”. Yes. That is all true. And if you remember, I absolutely hated them three years ago. Because as cute and hyped-up as these lip balms are, they honestly suck. To put it simply, they’re just not moisturizing. They don’t fix my dry, chapped lips whatsoever. So, you might be wondering why I’m doing another post on them. Why waste your time when we already know I hate them. However, these are apparently an “improved formula” from when I last tried them. They’re now certified organic (with nourishing organic oils, shea butter and fruit extracts) and a 100% natural with sustainably sourced ingredients, paraben and gluten free and of course, not tested on animals. But there’s just one thing that EOS didn’t improve in their new formula. They’re still not hydrating at all.

Well, as horrible as these are, they do serve ONE purpose. Unfortunately, that purpose isn’t to moisturize your lips. Instead (drum roll please), these lip balms are the perfect lip product to use as a primer before any liquid lipstick. Okay just hear me out. Liquid lipsticks are so damn drying, right? So I always need to layer a lip balm underneath or else my lips will legit peel away from the rest of my face. That better leave a cute image in your minds. But I’d like to keep my lips attached to my face and lookin’ beautifully plump hence why I put a lip balm underneath to help reverse the effects of those horrible liquid lipsticks. However, if you put too moisturizing or too heavy of a lip balm underneath of a liquid lipstick, it’s not going to dry down and adhere to your lips. Instead, you might just get a patchy mess. But because these EOS lip balms suck so much at hydrating your lips, they’re surprisingly a good base for liquid lipsticks. They moisturize your lips the SMALLEST amount to help the liquid lipstick be more comfortable and less drying as well as not being slippery, so the lipstick actually has a chance to dry down. I realize how counterproductive this is sounding. But just take my word for it. Try an EOS lip balm under your liquid lipstick next time. You’ll thank me. Maybe. Maybe not.

The #EOSShimmer Holiday Collection lip balms in wintery white and pink

If you have spent any time at all with me, then you probably know I never leave home without one of these strange little spheres of goodness. Evolution of Smooth lip balm has changed my life and I can’t go back. Here’s a couple of reasons why:

1. They keep my lips hydrated and soft all day long. They’re all natural and organic and we know well by now that the functionality of a design is crucial. So in this instance it’s obviously important that a lip balm, balms the lips! The ingredients here are perfectly fit for purpose; Evolution of Smooth weren’t lying when they talk about smooth. Another great functionality is how easy they are to apply, you never have to twist up some more of the stick, or accidentally squeeze out too much from the tube. It’s just a hemisphere, simple and easy, that lasts forever*.

2. Their shape is intriguing and tactile. The unveiling, experiential packaging if you will, of the product is charming and satisfying, an asymmetrical thumb printed panel on the front helps you to open and close with a twist and a click. The variety of bright colours and the unique shape make them hard to lose, unlike your classic lip balms that you accidentally leave in jean pockets, only to have them put through the washer and dryer. Aren’t those delightful surprises? Well it’s not so with EOS! (Although I do wonder what would happen if the sealed ball did actually make it’s way into a tumble dryer...Might it actually pass that test too? I’ll let you be the first one to try.) 

3. They’re also great conversation starters. For people who haven’t seen me use it before, there’s always a look of confusion that flashes across their face until they realise it’s just lip balm. A face that says “Why on earth are you touching a weird rubber ball to your lips?! They then usually tell me I’m a classic PDE student using a hipster product no one knows about. I hope to change that. (But I’m just sayin...EOS is already super popular in the States, everyone is just a little behind here in Scotland.)

4. They taste delicious. Step aside Vaseline, Burts Bees and Carmex; EOS has won me over. Please for the love of your lips, do yourself a massive favour and go buy one. (Available at Boots or Urban Outfitters with student discount!)
