I kinda of agree with some people that complains about the fact that Ethan lacks reaction/personality, but I think that we should also take into account the fact that first person games are made for the player to have more immersion in the story. I, in particular, find it annoying when the protagonist of a game doesn’t stop talking all the time, even when it’s in third person, but not everyone thinks so and everything is fine.
What Capcom tried to do in RE7 was to make it more immersive with less reactions and lines, but it clearly didn't work out, so they gave Ethan more reactions and personality. I liked him a lot more in RE8, but we have to remember that it’s still a game in first person, you have to feel immersed in the scenery and history, you can’t have a character reacting and talking about everything that happens around.
Of course, this is a matter of opinion, Capcom will not please all fans, but the fact is that Ethan wasn’t made to be "nice" and to have the best personality, just to give the feeling of immersion. I'm only commenting on this because I find it interesting that people are saying he’s boring, but talking about immersion and game story it makes sense for Ethan to be boring, because you, as the player, is supposed to have the reactions.
