Prologue The Oath Of Protection
I grew up in Darkness. I became who I am. when I was finally needed. stepping into a world so glorious it left me speechless. The sky was a dark color and bright stars filled the sky. they brightened in my presence as if I was known to them. my feet touched the clouds underneath. and I still to this day could never believe something could keep me on solid ground. I was brought in front of dozens of people. a woman so beautiful and shone like the sun. sat on a throne of clouds above them all. I felt myself bow before I could really understand why.I just felt it to be right. and as I heard her speak. I felt different. humbled. brave. like a soldier finally reaching the end of the battle.
“Do you know who you are?”
I said nothing. She asked me a new question.
“Do you know why you come to exist?”
I had no answers for her. What could I say? Did I even have a name? I suddenly heard her laugh.
“Stand my dear guardian I am glad you are here”
I stood staring up as she stood and came down. The people around helped her down. She walked with purpose and every step was gentle and powerful. She held her hand out to me.
“Please. Let me show you what it is we do”
I felt shaky and strange. But as I took her hand I felt calm. She guided me away from the people. To a waterfall.
“Look in and tell me what you see”
I peered into the waterfall. And was amazed to find another world entirely. It wasn’t like this world. It was filled with all sorts of life and structures. I looked back at the woman and explained what I saw. Her smile seemed amused.
“Would you like to see it more closely?”
I was stunned. But nodded. She pulled me into the world. I could not stop looking around at everything. She came to a small structure.
“There are creatures here called Humans. They live in homes like these”
She gently pulled me inside. Up the stairs and into a room. There layed what came to my mind as a child. She looked at me.
“Step closer. But do not wake him”
She whispered. I looked at the child again. Then I stepped carefully toward them. They were sleeping peacefully. But as I got closer. They suddenly twisted violently. Crying and panicking in their sleep. My eyes grew wide.
I cried out. The woman stepped forward quicker than I thought she could. Touching the child’s forehead. A creature of darkness swirled and appeared in front of us. It was massive, dark, and terrifying. It seemed to stare me down. Eyes pitch black and wicked. And as it charged forward I braced for impact. Only to hear the creature screech. I slowly opened my eyes to see the woman holding it tightly.
She shouted. And it burst into a cloud of black smoke disappearing forever. I was stunned. She looked angry. But as quick as her anger came it was gone. She looked at me.
“Now do you understand? Your purpose?”
I still did not know how to answer this question. I shook my head. She took a deep breath then held her hand out. I took it again. And she gently put my hand on the child. Who was calm again under my touch.
“His name is Oliver. He has nightmares like that often. Do you know why?”
I looked up at her and shook my head. She smiled softly.
“It is because he has no guardian. Our jobs are to protect the humans of this world from nightmares born in their mind. And I want you to take care of this one. Do you think you can do it?”
I paused for a moment. Everything seemed to slow down. I had the question in my mind.
Should I take on this Mission?
I took a deep breath looking at the kid.
He had never had anyone to protect him from those things…
I didn’t have to think twice.
The world disappeared and we were back in the room full of people.
She placed her hands on my shoulders.
“LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF THE COURT WE HAVE A NEW GUARDIAN! I PRESENT TO YOU AGNAR OUR FLAMING MORNING STAR!”
The people around me cheered.
And that was how I became a Guardian.
