True story: When I was in college, I worked for a local theme park in the summer, and according to the dress code, we could only wear white socks.  Now, I didn’t own that many pairs of white socks, and since I was a ride operator, most of the time I was behind the control panel, so my feet weren’t visible anyway, so I never bothered with that.  And nobody ever said anything about that, so there you go.  But then, one summer, one of my coaches (the higher ups on our “team”) decided to write me up for my non-white socks.  I objected to this, since it had never been an issue before, and took it to the head coach, who decreed that since I did such a good job otherwise, he would allow my socks to be overlooked.
