last night in an EUIV game with a friend my country’s entire population almost rose up in revolt
all because I broke a treaty
Rule the waves
Naxos, hoist the sails, let black flags rule the sea Venice, trader king, traitor scum , we’ll burn you once we’re free We’ll burn the land and salt the earth, the blue’s the home for me
Ottoman, with claw and fang, do not estinquish us in one foul stroke Lest your golden city must endure the vengance of the pirate’s yoke
So kill the doge and fuck the kings, we’ll show you what a pirate brings to town, it’s death, to sea, it’s riches, not sorcery, stiches or witches can rebuild before they learn what it is to be killed and it’s be killed or be free, be a symbol for the world to see: We rule the oceans where no man’s a slave where everyone’s free because no king is safe
There’s been lots of Paradox discussion here lately, so I’m interested in your opinion re: CK2. I’m a longtime EU4 player, but haven’t ever played CK2. Can you compare and contrast the two—strengths/weaknesses, good/bad mechanics, whatever? I’m basically interested in an amateur (unpaid) reviewer’s opinion before I buy.
Not a problem.Â
EUIV and CK2 are games that have different focuses, EUIV on the nation and CK2 on the character. Throughout the game this manifests itself. EUIV has national ideas and traditions to help shape your play style, while CK2 focuses more upon personal traits of the ruler, picking a focus in way of life and so on. So depending on how you visualize things, that can be either more or less fun from a personal standpoint. There’s definitely a lot of things to manage.
In EUIV, one of the big challenges was in acquisition and growth, the reward was the game leveling off and becoming easier as you became more powerful and the tax income from your larger income allowing you to field a truly gigantic armed force, rewarding your mastery of the game. In CK2, expansion and growth causes a bit more frustration with ornery vassals, hard vassal limits, having a terrible successor, and so on, changing the nature of the game from finding acquisitions to maintaining defenses. So the play cycle is definitely different.Â
Like every Paradox grand strategy game, there’s a lot of information that’s hidden in menus and maps, so there’s always a bit of a learning curve. I’d recommend it if you can find one of the periodic sales.
Thanks for the question, Anon.
