Reposted from @molecule_of_the_day (@get_regrann) - Eucalyptol is a colourless liquid naturally found at up to 90% concentration in eucalyptus oil. It has a fresh mint-like smell and a spicy, cooling ❄️ taste. This monoterpenoid is present in numerous species of plants 🌱, especially eucalyptus, camphor laurel, bay leaves and tea tree. Due to its pleasant spicy aroma and taste, eucalyptol is used in flavorings, fragrances, and cosmetics. Typically it is used at low concentrations in baked goods, confectionery 🍰 and beverages. It is also a component of mouthwash, body powder and cough suppressant. However, at higher eucalyptol concentrations, it is hazardous ☠️ via ingestion, skin contact or inhalation. Interestingly, eucalyptol can be used as an insectide 🐜🚫 and insect repellent as well. Thanks 🙏 anonymous for the suggestion! The molecular structure was created using ChemDoodle.
