Flashback Friday! Remembering Bill Christian (1924-2004) - Bill wore a patch on one eye and a captain’s hat every day in Lahaina, Maui and lived on the "Lahaina Turkey" boat for some time the harbor . He was every bit the character he appeared to be. Bill was dyslexic and had a photographic memory. He could walk down to a harbor, see a boat then return to his studio and etch it with incredible accuracy and detail. His dyslexia helped him see reflections in a different way which made it easy for him to visualize and duplicate. Once a week, he'd sit at 505 Front Street (like Santa Claus) and would meet kids and draw whatever they wished from marine life to super heroes on the their arms, hands and faces. When word got out, the line grew as long as a "Free Ice Cream Day" at Ben & Jerry's. Bill was recognized as one of the leading artists and authorities on etched scrimshaw. His work is represented in most all leading scrimshaw collections as well as the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress. He later created etched & grounded scrimshaw on slates which hang like wall art (see Pics). Very little of Bill's works were ever available on the open market, Lahaina Galleries was fortunate to carry his work. We have a few original etchings left in our archives.
